3Com 905B-TX, rock solid and (thanks to Parallel Tasking (tm)?) very fast
and stable. Have some of these cards running in a mixed enviroment and it
never failed me. Setup is easy with 2 disks to set some hardware and PnP
options, the Linux driver immediately picks them up.

I'm a newbie, just installed RH6.0. Is there a way to connect to AOL using PPP?
If yes, how do I do it? I called tech support but they told me AOL doesn't
support Linux now. I guess they meant they don't have AOL browser for Linux.
Thank you.

I have Win98 and RH6.0 installed on the same hard drive.
My ISP is AOL. The tech support told me AOL doesn't support Linux yet.
1) Is there a way to see the Win98 downloaded files from Linux in my situation?
If it works, then I can download files using AOL4.0 for Windows and use them in
Linux. My Win98 if partitioned as FAT.
2) I know most ISP supprt PPP connection. Anybody know if AOL does? If yes,
what is the DNS IP?
Thank you very much.

Make sure that you have a route to the win box. Ping by IP
first. If that works but ping by name doesn't then add the win
box to /etc/hosts. Also, check the net mask on both systems.

I have a problem with getting PPP to work. It is
a cheapbytes RH 6.0 cd, fresh install. No
strange things added or removed, all default.
Here is my problem in a nutshell: I ca connect
to my ISP just fine. I have no problems getting
ping or traceroute to work. I can see the
internet. But if I try to make any TCP
connection something very screwey happens.
I had pppd's "record" option on and I "tail -f"
on that file while I connected. I could ping
just fine, I could traceroute just fine. Then I
tried to connect to web site with lynx. I could
recieve about the first 4000 characters of the
file, and then suddenly it hangs. Then in a
couple of seconds, I get the first 4000
characters AGAIN. It keeps trying again and
again, but it never gets any farther than about
4000, maybe a little less. So I can recieve
small text-only html pages, but anything remotly
larger just fizzles. It tried with netscape too
with the same result.
And just to make it more interesting, I dual-
booted back into windows 95, and there are zero
problems. So the issue is on my end. PLEASE
HELP ME OBI-WAN, YOUR MY ONLY HOPE!

I have a 3 segment network that I am trying to route IPX on. My Linux
Box (server and router) has three NiCs in it 1 100TX, 1 10bT, and 1 2Gh
Wireless PCMCIA. I have TCP/IP routing fine over it, but I need IPX to
talk to one of my print servers. I tried to follow the limited
instructions for ipripd, but I could not even get the package to
compile correctly on my RedHat 6. I managed to find a pre-compiled i386
binary, and installed it. it seems to run, but whenever I have my print
server software search my network, the log on the router reports that
the package was ignored. I would like to know 3 things, 1 how to
correctly compile the ipripd with my version of linux (I don't trust
the precompiled), 2 extra options that need to be compiled with the
kernel (I have IPX support already), and 3 what config needs to be done
with the software to get it to work. I am new to linux, so my working
knowledge is a bit short.
Thanks in advance,
Michael Swain

I'm wondering whether linux would be good for the following:
Suppose I have a mac G3, an older powermac, and a PC P-III 450. I want
to
network the three together so that all can use the same printer(s), and
share
files (instead of putting everything on zip disks).
If I get ahold of an older model cheap pc, would it be a decent setup to
install
linux on it and use it exclusively as a network server for the other 3
computers? The 3 computers are used for a lot of
graphics-intensive stuff (mainly pagemaker and photoshop).
Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi,
If I recall correctly:
I've installed the pcmcia rpm package,
I loaded the module using coas
I had to tweak a configuration file in the pcmcia config directory for the
detect feature of the package load the correct driver for my hardware.
I also had to tell the pcmcia package not to use specific interrupt when
configuring the card.
I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000. Maybe you could take a look on the linux
laptop page (http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html) to see if other
people with the same hardware have tips to configure it.

I keep seeing these three-line ipchains rulesets. It just boggles my
mind, because they're wide open to "Satan's" hackers. I do hope they
have all the services in /etc/services commented out! I want to see a
ruleset for the hopelessly paranoid with dozens and dozens of rules.
Something that (like mine) checks for loopback spoofing, spoofing of
your private network, etc. I'd like to know if there's anything I can
be doing that I'm not already doing.
I would post my rules, but they might contain some security hole I
didn't concieve of...then the evil ones would come looking for
me...like cats creeping up on a bird with a broken wing. [slap! slap!
slap! -- snap out of it boy!] I even guard against my private network
in case it's compormised! It's not because I'm paranoid, it's because
it's not all that hard to do, so why not have the extra security.
PS. Okay, some of that was touge-in-cheek -- I'm not really that bad,
but I do want to see the "paranoid" rules.

Subject: Q: How to get "genericstable" working?
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 15:33:50 +0100
I have a RedHat 5.2 (Intel) system ...
I have been trawling various resources on this matter and I am little
confused, to say the least ...
By reconfiguring Sendmail, I want to be able to map an outgoing,
fully-formatted email address such as [EMAIL PROTECTED], to a
local user on our server.
I have tried the following:
Created a text file called /etc/genericstable containing a single line
of text:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] localusername
I ran "makemap -r hash genericstable.db < genericstable".
In sendmail.cf, I changed the line "#Kgenerics dbm /etc/genericstable"
to "Kgenerics hash /etc/genericstable.db"
After stopping and restarting Sendmail (no errors appear), messages sent
to user [EMAIL PROTECTED] arrive at user
[EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than going to localusername ...
I also tried replacing localusername with [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in /etc/genericstable and going through the motions again - same result.
I am doing this all totally wrong?? If so, thanks in advance for any
tips!
Dave.

At this point it looks like you're using a pppd that does not support
MS-CHAPv2.
See the man pages for pppd and syslog.conf for setting up a higher
debugging level so that you can see the configuration handshaking details.
If you see the far end proposing protocol 0x82 and your end NAKing the
proposals, that's what's happening.
You might want to visit the PoPToP site, they have links to the MS-CHAPv2
patches for pppd.

For the @home service you need the dhcpd to get an ip adress from the DHCP
server!!
try using (as root) dhcpcd -h put-your-Client-ID-here if you now run ifconfig
and it shoud show you an ip for yout eth0 and for the lo (or ifconfig eth0)
if this command doesn't work get the new dhcpcd from my website
http://CC3417-A.hnglo1.ov.nl.home.com
if your ifconfig command shows up with an ip for your eth0 you can put the
dhcpd command in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup file. search this file
for some entry like
if [ -n "$PUMP" ]; then
echo -n "Determining IP information for $DEVICE..."
if /sbin/pump -i $DEVICE ; then
echo " done."
else
echo " failed."
exit 1
fi
then replace the if /sbin/pump -i $DEVICE
with if /sbin/dhcpcd -h put.your.Client-ID here
make shure your eth0 says dhcp in the netcfg!!!
Thats it!! if does not work you can email me and i will try to help you!
