I'm not speaking from a position of knowledge, but because I've read up
on PPP connectivity recently this rings a bell. Look at the Internet
Connectivity HOWTO, or it might be called the Internet Hookup HOWTO and
look at mtu and mru settings - that *might* be it.

Also, not a great leap of intelligence I know, put "+linux +ppp +faq
-gazette" into Google, there are some good PPP FAQs out there.

one - you have to connect both pc with a crossover cable if you don't have
a hub. check the posting about crossover cable in this ng.
two - you need to get the the machine detect the nic. usually 3com is
easy to be detected by linux. but you didnot mention your nic models.
three - assign ip numbers to the nic. both must be different numbers but
on the same subnet.
four - if both nics have been configured and started. both pc should be
able to talk. if still in doubt, try ping each other.

i think with the above guide, networking and ethernet howto you should be
able to connect both pcs.

Subject: System being probed
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 16:01:34 GMT

My system is being probed on a regular basis by what I think is the
same person using a dialup account.

My logs show the various IPs this person is using as he/she attempts
to get in using telnet, ftp, and other services.

On many ocassions, I read the logs very soon after the attempts, so I
can run traceroute and other things.

But, I'm not an expert at this and don't quite know what to do. I
know that probing and access attempts are a regular thing on the net,
but I think this is the same individual trying to get in.

What can I do to find out who this person is, or to let him/her know
that I know what's going on, or maybe probe back.

Thanks!

I don't know if this has been said already, but make sure the Linux
box's resolv.conf is pointing to the DNS servers that the SyGate
machine points to, NOT to the SyGate machine.

For some reason, Linux pointing to the SyGate machine (as SyGate would
have you set it up), doesn't work.

Okay, I've loaded up VMware and yes Wow is appropriate but I can't seem
to get Windows95 to use the bridged network to reach my host computer's
(Linux) Network interface.

Now I the host uses connects to the network via dhcp and I state in
Windows95 that it should use dhcp but I can't seem to get it up and
running so that I can use Windows95 to reach the internet.

Any suggestions?? Thanks inadvance.

Subject: HELP! Linux using Static IP!
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 17:50:07 GMT

I have recently installed Red Hat 6.0 on my home
PC. I have two Ascend Pipeline 75's, one is
configured for NAT and one is configured for a
static IP. I have ISDN to my house. When I
configure my Linux machine for NAT (changing the
IP's and routing) and use the Pipeline that is
configured for NAT, I can access the Internet just
fine. But when I switch to the router to the
Pipeline that is configured for a static IP and
then also update the IP's and routing, I can NOT
get to the Internet.

With the static IP scenerio, I can ping my NIC and
also the router, which is configured as the
default gateway, but I can not ping anything out
on the Internet. I have have Ascend dial into and
verify the settings and they said the Ascend is
properly setup. If I telnet into the Pipeline, I
can enter diagnostics mode and I am able to ping
out on the Internet.

I feel that it is something with my configuration
of my Linux box, more specifically a problem with
routing...? I have re-verified that my static IP,
broadcast, netmask, and default gateway are all
correct numbers. Ifconfig and route show that
everything is also correctly setup...

Please help! I really want to make this work and
become a HUGE Linux supporter!

You need another rule to make the one you have bi-directional
(switch -s to -d).
Of course you could use the -b flag instead (see below).

>I've tried ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -s
192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -j
[snip]

Try this instead:

Let's assume that the workstation you want to give access to is
192.168.99.10 and that your network is 192.168.1.0

ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -s 192.168.99.10 -d 192.168.0/24 -b -j
ACCEPT

which is equivalent to

ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -s 192.168.99.10 -d 192.168.0/24 -j ACCEPT
ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -s 192.168.0/24 -d 192.168.99.10 -j ACCEPT

which is equivalent to

ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -s 192.168.99.10 -d
192.168.0/255.255.255.0 -b -j ACCEPT

I had similar errors with kernel 2.2.6. Turned out to be a kernel bug so I
upgraded to 2.2.10 which is working fine. If the errors aren't causing any
problems for you, like connections being dropped / timing out etc. then
don't worry about it. If you're running a new kernel then perhaps your NIC /
hub / cable is bad.

control daemons with

in your case

 /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart

Hey Joel, thanks for the info, one quick question..

The linux boxes I talked about earlier, they use the "remote lpd

JetDirect IP address), any thoughts...

I did try what you said and the script worked from one of our servers,
but the individual machines still have the problem.. :-)

Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 09:24:23 -0700

Recently my ISP, GST/Whole Earth Networks if you are familiar with them,
"upgraded" their systems. Since then I have not been able to get PPP to
work. I can log in ok, but the PPP negotiation fails with the error
"Could not determine remote IP address" from pppd. My setup is stock
x86 RedHat 6.0. pppd is version 2.3.7, and the kernel is 2.2.5. I have
included the pppd log below, but I am afraid I do not know enough to
interpret it properly. I am hoping someone with more experience can
explain what is going on and suggest a solution to my problem. Thanks.
