I've just installed Redhat 6.0, all went well, scsi was detected,as was
my ethernet card, and Intel EtherExpress 10/100. One booting the first
time, eth0 was not found, hence making the computer hang when trying to
bring up eth0. Checking /etc/conf.modules there is an entry for the
eepro100 driver, so why is it not found? It worked fine under Redhat
5.2.
modprobe eth0 make the card appear, but its a bit late by the time I've
booted into single user mode.

Are you sure "popd" is working on your server ? Verify imap package, I think that.

These work quite fine for me, they've got a VIA/RHINE-II Chipset, which is
supported by 2.0.37 and 2.2.xx Kernels.
What I'm currently trying to find out is who to switch them to 100 MBit/Half
Duplex by default. I'm using a Windows PC as second Computer and connect it
to my Linux PC via crossover cable. This network only operates at 100 MBit
if I force the Windows Driver to do 100 MBit and boot my Linux PC afterwards
thus it detects the 100 MBit Carrier...

Somebody posted this INIT and said it worked for them...S71=1 add it to the
connect script when you initialize the modem. The 1 is for Async-Sync PPP
conversion. I would be interested in any steps, e.g Modules, Rpm's and
scripts used if you get this to work. I have a client who would want this
instead of a Cable modem solution and I don't have a 'spare' BRI hangin'
around to test it!
Hope it helps...

As root, you should use the netcfg tool (or edit the ifcfg-pppX files
direct) to set them so that normal users can control the interface.

Hello,
I'd like to install RedHat 5.0 on an old Compaq Deskpro XE 433S.
1 - There is a 170Mb HD with 12Mb RAM in it with CPU 486dx33...what do
you think, is it enough for fluent work (apache for little group). How
big swap space recommended?
2 - I'd like to install from ftp source and the computer originally
comes with Intel EtherExpress 16 network card witch is listed in the
supported card list, but when i try to give the io port address and the
irq (you know there is a option window so i don't talk about the
profile file) it comes back with a message: can't find device.
Any idea would be great, Janos

1. The last time I tried to compile it (which was a while ago, though) I
had the same problem. I had to rip some header files to shreds since they
were trying to redeclare structs etc. Do a make, find the structs it's
complaining about (which will be in two separate linux include directories)
and comment out the struct of your choice. It'll probably be a trial and
error process, but you will get it to compile if you persist.
2. That should do it, but I'm lead to believe that a full internal network
is handy to have for a router.
3.There are a whole bunch of IPX tools that set up routes etc. Don't forget
to assign network numbers in the Windows (I assume) boxes, which default to
net num. 0.

I don't tihnk your problem is with NAT (or indeed, at the IP level at all):
"Delaying initialisation" usually means the kernel hasn't loaded a hardware
driver. By default, Linux will only search for a single Ethernet card. There
are three ways to make it serach for more. One is to use kernel parameters
on the boot prompt command line. Another (yuck) is to edit space.c in the
source to make it search for as many as you need, and then rebuild the
kernel. The third escapes me at the moment... In any case the Ethernet HOWTO
(for RH, this is usually in /usr/doc/HOWTO) explains all three: that's your
best bet.
The best way, if you're using LILO or loadlin, is the command line method.
Use an append= line in /etc/lilo.conf, or add it to the end of the command
line for the batch file (if any) that you use to boot Linux from a DOS
prompt.
Cheers
Simon

First question: probably not. You'll have to talk to the sysadmin. You may be
able to get them to unblock the port you need. Maybe you could try using a
different port; Quake et. al will let you use any port, but I don't know about
StartCraft, particularly if you need to use battle.net.
Second question: not a chance. It's amazing enough to get Windows programs to
work under Windows. What wine attempts is to intercept Windows calls and
translate them into X/Unix calls. Sounds simple, but it's pretty complicated,
and wine is dodgy at best. Programs that do run, work at about a tenth normal
speed, and fall over in a stiff breeze. That said, hats off to the development
team, even that's a huge achievement!

Do you have ftp and telnet enabled?
Check /etc/inetd.conf. There should be a lines starting with "ftp" and
"telnet" amongst many others. If these are commented out (line starts with
#), then the services are unavailable. Remove the #, save it, and do kill
-SIGHUP <pid_of_inetd>
BTW: An FTP server is NOT an HTTP server -- that's a different story
altogether.

You may need to rebuild the kernel, and ensure that masquerading is included
in the kernel. Also, check /etc/sysconfig/network to make sure forwarding is
switched on. Finally, check the forwarding/firewalling rules in force: use
ipchains --list.
I also find that SOCKS works much better in complement with NAT than NAT
alone for web; my sister's keen on Hotmail (ugh) and she couldn't load it
through a straight NAT setup, even though normal pages (like www.linux.org
;-) worked fine.

Hello Steve,
D-Link DFE 530 TX uses "via-rhine.o" and it's been working like a charm for such
cheap NIC.
(1) You can create rc.modules file with the following 2 lines in it:
#!/bin/sh
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net/via-rhine.o
This will load the module at bootup, of course, you can load it by typing:
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net/via-rhine.o
If this is the case, fire-up netcfg and activate eth0 manually.
(2) Place this rc.modules to /etc/rc.d/ (as /etc/rc.d/rc.modules) and chmod
it to 755.
(3) Make sure your conf.modules file has the following 2 lines in it
(assuming your NIC's irq is 10 and io address at 0xf880):
options eth0 io=0xf880 irq=10
alias eth0 via-rhine
(4) Reboot your machine, can you see Bringing up interface eth0 [OK] this
time?

To use the command line parameters, you need to specify both ethernet
cards.
One other way, which isn't normally recommended on the grounds that you
might forget you did it and then wonder why it stops working when you
update your kernel, is to edit space.c so it automatically searches for >1
ethernet card.
It's this file that determines the Linux by default searches only for one
Ethernet card.

Linux can do NAT, like those cool little personal ISDN routers, only Linux
calls it "masquerading". So, not only can your Linux box be the mail server
(and DNS server, and NNTP server, and <insert important service here>
server) but using NAT your users can get onto the Internet through it as a
router too. Linux also includes packet filtering for firewalling purposes.
Masquerading and firewalling are controlled using the ipchains program for
2.2+. I recommend the Ethernet HOWTO (because there are gotchas for
multiple Ethernet cards) and the Multiple-Ethernet HOWTO, and the
Firewalling HOWTO.
These are usually to be found in /usr/doc/HOWTO, but a quick search on the
Web will turn them up if you want to make sure you've got the latest one.

What do you want to configure ??
first you must have a ipx protocol:
type from console
ipx_interface add eth0 802.2 222
ipx_interface add eth0 802.3 333
of course thi is just an example
with ifconfig you can see if they working
now what
Mars must be started:
nwserv
or killed
nwserv -k
now what goto /etc/nwserv.conf
under section 1 configure the volumes
like:
1 SYS /var/mars_new/sys kO
k is for lowwercase
O is for longnames so you can store some longname files here
r is for readonly volume
1 VOL1 /home/user kO
under section 2 give the name of your emulation of Novell server:
2 MYNWSERVER
goto some machine with ipx/spx support and make login must working
of course after editing the conf.file you must restart server
nwserv -k
nwserv
have nice day

Hello Pete,
(1) You should first make a directory /mnt/gandalf_cd or whatever
(2) issue the following command:
smbmount \\\\gandalf\\d /mnt/gandalf_cd -N
(assuming "d" is the drive letter for your cd-rom)
-N option means don't ask for a password

Subject: pppd fails at multiple connects
Date: 26 Aug 1999 11:52:16 GMT
I have a problem with my ppp setup. When I dial in for the first time
since a reboot, all is well. All later attempts appear to be
successful, ie. pppd starts, /dev/ppp0 gets up, an IP address is
assigned to me and a default route is set in my routing table. When I
connect to a remote host, the connection is accepted, but sometimes
nothing happens after that.
For example, when I telnet to one of our main boxes, telnet will
connect, but I do not get a login prompt. The same is true for ftp,
http, etc. With my limited networking knowledge, I would say that the
IP stack comes up as expect, but somehow TCP doesn't.
Another thing which happens now and then is that the modems handshake
correctly. pppd will report "Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem", but the
IP addressess will not get exhanged. This happens less often that the
first problem. As a final remark, it doesnt go wrong always. Sometimes
I can connect any number of times without problems.
I am running Linux 2.2.9 with pppd version 2.3.9 on a Pentium 2. There
are no network cards in the machine. I usually compile ppp as a
module, so to be on the safe side I also tried fixing it in the
kernel. The same effect. I need a reboot (cold or warm doesnt matter)
before it will work again.
Any suggestions?
