You might want to consider deleting all protocols on the Windows
machines except for TCP/IP just to keep things clean.
I don't know how you installed Samba but if you have the source
code, there is a file called smbprint in the /examples/printing
directory. It has pretty much all the directions needed.
If you need more, try to find the Linux Printing How-To. It
should cover setting up Ghostscript, printing remotely, etc.

I setup Linux as a PPP server and I have problem to connect from Win98
dialup network. The set up of Win98 dialup is correct because I can
dial to my ISP. I have trouble to connect the Linux ppp server which I
set it up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
The symptom of the problem is the dialin and login from Win98
successfully but when it run pppd then it fail. Attached are the mgetty
and messags log file for your reference. The ppp options are:
-detach
modem
crtscts
lock
proxyarp

Subject: Struct SK_BUFF(Networking code)
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 11:25:57 +0200
I need to know how the networking manages to get data from a process
and passes it to the sk_buff struct , so that, this is the struct used to
pass the data to the devices(for example to Ethernet).
I know the last call made , before passing the data to the device is:
dev->hard_start_xmit(skb,dev)
but which is the way data get into skb?
I mean,
How many packets for each skb? ----> It depends? , What about?
How many priority queue buffers per device? ----> 3?
So, as you can see I am a bit lost.
If you know any thing, that helps, please let me know.
Any help will be wellcome.
Thanks in advance

I had ip-masquerading setup with my LAN on eth0 and a dialup
connection on ppp1 and everything worked great. When I switched over
to Roadrunner on a cablemodem (eth1) everything quit working. Linux RH
6.0 fails the eht1 on bootup and now gnome locks up and I can't seem
to do anything but power down the computer to start over. I installed
the vortex rrlogind, changed the dns nameservers to the roadrunner
ip's, changed the entries in the rc.firewall file, etc. I'm stumped.
If anyone can help me I'd sure appreciate it.

Have you tried telnetting in to yourself from the linux box ie
telnet localhost
Also telnet <hostname> should work
Also you must have the name/ip addresse of the windows box in /etc/hosts
on the Linux side otherwise the attempt to authenticate the telnet
connection will fail.
Win95/98 also has a hosts file. Shipped as C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS.SAM this can
be edited to show your linux box by name and renamed to C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS
- note that unlike Linux you have to reboot before the changes are seen.
If samba is running then the Windows box should magically get the host
name of your linux box.
Note that it is normal for ftp sessions for user 'root' to fail
(security feature). It can be enabled I think by looking in the file
/etc/ftpusers - IIRC the logic is backwards ie users in this file are
blocked - if you want root ftp access then remove the root entry from
this file.

> windows to linux it just times out and when i telnet from linux to

As shipped Windows does not have the ability to act as either a telnet
server or ftp server. Cynics like me refer to Win95 as a 'ping server'
as thats about it. IIRC there are ftp servers available as
shareware/freeware - try Tucows or shareware.com.

The simplest way is NAT, so you don't need the aliased ip, take a look
at http://www.csn.tu-chemnitz.de/HyperNews/get/linux-ip-nat.html

hello,
some computers in the LAN of our company use private IP
and their default gateway is set to a IP-masquerading linux machine
when the computer which uses private IP download a large file, say an ISO
image
the connection is always cut (while machine use real IP does not have this
problem)
moreover, when the computer telnet to outside and remain idle for about 5
minutes
the telnet connection is also cut, i ensure that this is not due to
autologout function built in Unix
(this problem also does not happen on the machines which use real IP)

Windows (95, NT4) can not read the long filenames on the linux 5.2 install
CD's. Im not positive, but I bet 98 cant read it either. This seems to be
a recurring problem in Microsoft OS's. The CD ROM format in question is
the ISO format. Microsoft can only read the long filenames on CD ROM's
with the Joliet extensions..
This is why the FTP server could not find the files that the install
program was looking for. I banged my head against this problem for 4 hours
one day and I finally gave up, yanked the CD ROM out of the widoze machine
and put it in the machine I wanted to install linux on.

Hi all,
I have setup a firewall on my system (using ipchains), but have problems
getting Licq to work on the same machine. These are the settings
concerning icq:
ipchains -A output -p udp -s $myip -d icq.mirabilis.com 4000 -i eth0 -j
ACCEPT
ipchains -A input -p udp -s icq.mirabilis.com 4000 -d $myip -i eth0 -j
ACCEPT
ipchains -A input -p tcp -s $any 1024:65535 -d $myip 1024:65535 -i eth0
-j ACCEPT
ipchains -A output -p tcp -s $myip 1024:65535 -d $any 1024:65535 -i eth0
-j ACCEPT
The default policy on all chains is REJECT.
Whenever I try to start icq (and go online) it tries to connect forever
without succes (and without error message).
Has anyone got icq to work with a firewall ?
Thanks

Subject: IP Masquarading & Netmeeting -> HELP
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 12:30:29 +0200
Hello,
I'm having a Linux-machine here (Suse 6.1).
This machine became my Internet-gateway for my other 4 machines (windows98).
It all works great ! -> Http, FTP, Mail, ICQ
The only thing that won't work is Netmeeting. I can call somebody; he gets
my picture through the webcam, but I can't hear or see the other party.
It's also not possible to call me with netmeeting.
Does somebody know what I can do about it ?
I'm a beginner with LINUX, so please not to complicated, and please in
readable English !
Thanx !!!
Henry
