Hello Brent,
Make sure your directory permissions include x if
they do not have user.group permissions allowing
access to their contents. Example:
chmod g+x public_html
chmod o+x public_html
cd ..
chmod g+x wwwmedia

Hello,
I am running RH 6.0 with kernel 2.2.5-15. I have configured kppp to get
a ppp connection.
If I use telnet to test the setup then everything works up to
Connected to <hostname>
but then no login prompt comes up. ftp exhibits a similar behaviour.
What on earth could cause this problem????
To make matters even stranger: if I use netcfg then I can make a
correctly behaving ppp connection using ifup ppp0. So pppd is not the
problem.
I have used kppp under Mandrake 5.1 with kernel 2.0.35 without any
problem.
I would be extremely grateful for help as this is driving me mad.
Thx in advance,
Michel

Hi,
I have a PPP server setup on linux and would like to list my user/password
entries in the pap-secrets file.
I have read trough several howto's and other docs on the net but cannot make
out how to do this, they all talk about hostname's and passwords.
How do i types a line in the pap-secrets file the username and the password
for a user dialing in to my server under a mgetty/AutoPPP/PAP configuration
???
Greetings,
Terrence
PS: I DO NOT want to do '* * "" *' to let PPP authenticate through
/etc/passwd, for a stupid reason i need the pap-secrets file.

This depends on what you mean by "switched hub" and linux
firewall/router. Linux has the capability to do the same thing as
"Layer 3" Swtiches. It also has the cabability to do what a router can
do. So, what exactly do you want to compare?

I use Red Hat 6 with the CNET Pro120B 10/100 (tulip) network card. When
I first installed Linux w/ network support, it hanged (and spit out a
bunch of numbers) during boot up. I couldn't get into login, so I
reinstalled w/o networking. I recompiled the kernel to support my
network card because it wouldn't boot properly as a module. It worked
fine, but all this was before I got my crossover cable to try to
connect it with my win98.
I used the Control Panel to try to enble networking again (entering
192.168.1.1 as IP, 255.255.255.0 as netmask, and enable at boot), but
when I restart, I get the same hanging (spit out) as before. I go back
in without networking (another kernel) and undo what I did. I changed
the smb.conf (WORKGROUP and Windows logon) and restarted it. It boots,
but without my "enable at boot", eth0 is never initialized. So when I
turn on Windows, I get "domain server not valid...". At this point, I
have not a single clue as to what I should try. Any, and I mean _ANY_,
suggestions would help. I'm planning to reinstall Red Hat w/
networking, but knowing what happened earlier, it will probably hang
again.
Extra Info:
-Red Hat install detects a tulip network card, but it continues to hang
during boot.
-With the recompiled kernel, it detects the network card perfectly,
assigning ioports/irqs, but will not initilize eth0.
-I _had_ eth0 and the new kernel working together, but when I changed
the networking settings in the Control Panel, it stopped. Now, even
after undoing my changes, it won't work and will only boot with eth0
disabled during boot.

but if you try to use it anywhere near its fullest extent, they'll

Hi all,
I have set up PPP configuration to dial up a ISP called lineone.net.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I dialled up the ISP direct and discovered that there are two different
flavours of server i can connect to.
1)
gives me a login:, password: prompts
and then expects me to run ppp using the command line.
2)
The other probably expects ppp right away and if i send a cr/lf then it
asks me for a supervisor password.
I used the html configurator to set up a chat script for case (1) and
that works ok,
but not for case (2).
Has anyone got a script that can cope with the different types of
dialup, that i can enter in the configurator ?
cheers peter.

fetchmail retrieves your mail and hands it to sendmail on your linux

configureable via sendmail, but it's most likely to be somewhere like
/var/spool/mail/<username>

Well I found the answer to my problem myself but thought in case anyone
else had the same problem they might find my answer helpful.
As a non root user, I could not establish a ppp session with gnome-ppp.
/var/log/messages reported that the 'connect script failed' even before
the modem picked up to dial. However as root everything worked
perfectly.
I figured it must be a permissions problem somewhere but I didn't know
where. After checking which files were installed with my
gnome-networking RPM file, I had set gnome-ppp suid root but I saw there
was also a gnome-ppp-chat file which was not set this way. After
altering the permissionons on gnome-ppp-chat, everything worked
perfectly.
Again, just thought this might be useful for other experiencing the same
problem.

I have a huge securtiy problem with SambA!
This is th eproblem,
I have defined a service called sybase. This service uses:
comment = Sybase development tools
path = /opt/sybase
write list = @sybase
read list = @sybase
oplocks = true
force group = sybase
I have also made a Unix group called sybase with the sybase developers
in it.
When I try to access the sybase dir /opt/sybase in a bash shell with a
none sybase group user I get Permision Denied. Wich is good.
Now when I login in to a Windows machine and use network neighbourhood
and browse to the service sybase, this user wich is not in the sybase
group will see all the files and can even read them!!!!
In my opinion he should'nt even be granted access to this directory
while he has no access to the directory via a linux-shell so he
should'nt get access with a SMB client either.
How can I change this?! Or is this indeed a serious security bug!?

Well the problem here is that we need extra space on the complete /
volume
and this can be solved by adding a extra harddrive and adding that
freespace to the / mountpoint. This is called spanning
Since we son't feel like creating extra mount points and symlinking every
possible dirctory to the new partition. (You don't know whats going to
grow). And thats why spanning is the solution

Zebra has support for OSPF (RFC2338), nice cisco style interface too.
Last I checked, however, that support was still kinda flaky .
BGP works just wonderfully with it, however and there have been 3 releases
since I tried OSPF, so I'm sure it's coming along nicely. (www.zebra.org).
IGRP and EIGRP are cisco proprietary products that must be licensed from
cisco, as far as I know, which means that the likelihood of a freeware
port rather unlikely, IMHO. http://www.zebra.org/spec.html lists
the supported protocols and platforms.

Give up with the crossover cable, and get a hub and some Cat-5
cabling. It makes things much easier.
To verify that your network card is indeed working, type "ifconfig".
You should see a listing for device lo, and device eth0. If you don't
see eth0 listed, and have the kernel compiled to support your network
card, type the following : "ifconfig eth0 up ipaddress" (substituting
the IP address you want the card to have for the word). This will
enable your network card.
I'll assume the control panel you mean is linuxconf. I use Slackware
4.0, so I don't have that. I did use RH 6.0 for a while though. Do
everything you've been doing in there, but don't make the card active
at boot time. After boot-up, use the above command to activate it.
See if that works.
Last resort:
Get X-Windows (or KDE, or GNOME) running, and do the kernel
recompilation again "make xconfig". See if you can find a different
driver than the tulip driver, preferably one that exactly matches your
card. I recommend checking Donald Becker's homepage for a better
driver anyway (if it's not included in RH 6.0 list of network
drivers). http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/100mbs.html#100baseT
Check all of the hyperlinks until you find the exact model of your card.
Hope this helped.
Peace,
Joe
