I think for samba you need TCP/IP.

Here's a long shot......
All NC's have a MAC#,manufacturer's are given a set of #'s as a
"header" which will be part of the MAC address of the card.IF YOU ARE
LUCKY your cards may have the "header" # on the circut board.OK,the
hard part for you may be finding the web site that has a list of the
"header" #'s to find out who made the card.I was at a site that had a
list about 6 months age,but I didn't bookmark it.
Good luck

IPX is a Novell protocol. You want TCP/IP for your SAMBA config.

Hey,

I can't get a user specific (%U) include parameter working in smb.conf!!!

Have a [homes] section in samba that I can read and write ok from windows,
and directly beneath this share I have an include line:
include = /etc/smb.conf.%U
Now, when I initially start samba and do a net view //(my samba server) on
windows, all of the shares come up ok. But when I try to do a net use on
one the shares defined through the "include" parameter above, I get: "The
network name cannot be found."

I do another net view //(my samba server) and all that's listed is the
[homes] share. Very dissapointing!

When I do a "smbclient -L (my samba server) -U user%password" from the linux
box, all of the shares are listed ok, and I can even connect to them using
smbclient ok. I can even do this when I can't see the "include" shares from
windows 2000 using "net view"!?

Thanks very much,

Brendan

Greetings,

I can no longer telnet to my Linux(Mandrake 6.0/2.2.9 SMP) machine. It just
stopped working. I did not change ANY of the SAMBA, host or network config
files, so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. SAMBA works fine, I
can FTP, ping etc. but not telnet. I need a telnet connection to run
Omni-X(x-server) from my NT workstation. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks much.

Depending on which distribution you choose you may need to
compile AFS, VFAT, NTFS or FAT into the kernel. Any
distribution will include all the tools you need. I have a
couple Red Hat 6 distros running but lately have been
leaning towards Mandrake because of the extra stuff thats
thrown in - it *all* Linux so it really gets down to the
ease of installation and accessibility (on the CD) to the
apps you need.

I was getting the same error message with a 2.2.11 kernel.
I rebooted off the old kernel (2.2.5-15) and nfsd loaded
fine. I had recompiled 2.2.11 with the NFS stuff in it and
as modules but nfsd kedt showing the same error. I did a
search on Deja News and found a reference that suggested
getting off 2.2.11. FWIW.

Subject: Re: how to set up both DHCP and localnet
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 01:54:10 -0500

I am having simular problems..this MAY (or..maynot) help you..

If you have two network interfaces and one of them needs to be a dhcp
interface, proceed as follows: Configure both interfaces in YaST for the
appropritate driver. For example, use YaST -> System Administration ->
Integrate hardware into system -> Configure networking device, to select the
correct driver for each network interface. The DHCP interface must be eth0,
this is hard coded into the dhclient script. Then set the DHCP client to
start on bootup from YaST -> System administration -> Network
configuration -> DHCP Client. After you reboot your system you should notice
that the eth0 interface is up. (DHCP client defaults to eth0) You can verify
this with the command ifconfig. You need to manually bring up the eth1
interface. For example: ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.4 broadcast 192.168.1.255
netmask 255.255.255.0 up In this example the eth1 interface has an IP
address of 192.168.1.4 and is on a class C subnet.
Taken from:

http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e/dhcp_client.html

I am routing through 3 nics (no hub) so it does me little good.
Hope it helps you...let me know if it does.

I've got an Acer Aspire, Pentium120, 96Mb RAM, 2Gb IDE hard
disk running RedHat 6.0 and Apache 1.3.6. It's running well
and extremely stable. You can hit the web server and check
responsiveness at; http://c659784-b.flrmnd1.tx.home.com
It's a desktop PC that's been replaced. Since I have cable
modem internet access I decided to play around with Linux
and Apache. It's not blazingly fast but it does its job
quite well (IMO).

Subject: NFS and permission denied
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 06:11:49 GMT

I'm starting to work on creating an NFS link from one Red
Hat Linux 6.0 system to another. I had to back rev to
kernel 2.2.5 (from 2.2.11) to resolve an error when trying
to load rpc.nfsd. Now that NFS is loading and gets started
ok (rpcinfo -p shows that it's listening) I'm trying to
mount the exported directories.

I've gone so far as to change my hosts.allow and hosts.deny
to let *everything* in (not permanently, just when I'm
working on it) but still get a 'permission denied' when
trying the mount. I try to mount as a normal user I get
'root has to do that' even though I set it to be user
mountable. If I try to mount it as root then I get the
'permission denied'. I figure I'm missing something easy
but between the HOWTO and the O'Reilly Assoc. "Managing NFS
and NIS" I've managed to numb my brain. Any hints, tips
suggestions (or flames) would be appreciated. TIA.

Check out the R2121 at www.netopia.com. It has two 56K internals and an
optional 56K external port. The aggregate bandwidth using 3 bonded modems
will give you about 10-14kps thoughput. It supports NAT and basic firewall
filtering. Cheap too :-). My company is a Netopia reseller, so feel free to
e-mail me directly if you have any questions.

Subject: RH 6.0 nfsd problem
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 08:14:49 +0200

After compiling new kernel 2.2.11 on RedHat 6.0 I have got problems with
nfsd.
During system startup, execution of rpc.nfsd produces message:

    nfssvc: Function not implemented

I was sure that it was the problem with new kernel only, but recently I must
recompile my original (created during system installation) kernel 2.2.5-15
and I'vo got the same.

So currently I am using 2.2.11 and there is one more problem - during
startup I receive message that xfs is started OK, but in true it's not
initialised and must be started manually.

I found foolowing mesages in system log (/var/log/messages):
....
depmod: /lib/modules/2.2.11/fs/ncpfs.o: unresolved symbol(s)
.....
PAM_pwdb[610]: (su) session opened for user xfs by (uid=0)
PAM_pwdb[610]: (su) session closed for use xfs
xfs: xfs startup succeeded
.....

My last question is: how to workaround "FAILED" message displayed during
initialisation of eth0 on laptop (which is caused by delayed PCMCIA startup)
?

Could anyone help me ?

You need a static class c public address on the WAN side of your router. You
then need to redirect telnet request to the IP of the local host. What IP
are you trying to telnet to?

i have a linux box setup and performing ip masq as our internet gateway.

segment can ping the linux box and our mainframe. if i try to ping those
same two boxes from a remote branch i can get a response from the

ping the linux box.

the linux box is setup with two nic cards and the 'route -n' results

any ideas of why computers on the same network segment are able to ping
the linux box but computers and routers at remote locations cannot? it
seems like the linux box doesn't know how or where to answer those
requests back to or something. thanks for any input or direction you can
