regarding a 3C509, or IS it the same. I tought they are different...?

Thanks in advance,

You want ipportfw.

In 2.0.x it's a kernel patch and a control tool, in 2.2.x it's built into
the kernel patch and ipmasqadm controls it.

If you need the 2.0.x patch try looking on freshmeat, or take a look at
http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ip_masq_vpn.html for a link to the
ipportfw home page.

Does taking eth1 down and bringing up back up with ifconfig improve
the situation?

I have similar symptoms, and that usually helps me. I would like to
know how to make it go away permanantly though. BTW I'm using a
firewall too. I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Subject: Qmail mail server???
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 14:52:18 -0500

Hi all,

I am attempting to set up a mail server to do the following:

1. Download all of corporate mail i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
2. Filter messages down to each individuals mailbox.
3. Enable users to download their messages from Winblows 98 or our
As400.
4. Send mail inside the company. (from windows and 400).
5. Send mail to the outside world.

I am running RH6.0 and I was told by a colleague that Qmail was the way to
go for ease of operation as well as great security. So, I just doe right in.
At this point I can send mail within my Linux box. (user to user). I can
send mail up to my Linux box from widows. And I can send mail up to the web
from my linux box, but I can't get mail down from the net, nor can I get my
mail from the Linux box down to windows.

I am running smtp, qmtp, and pop3 with tcpserver. Have I just overlooked
some configurations on the POP3? and how do I set up the queue to download
all new mail periodically?

I send thanks in advance for any help, and apologies for my lack of
knowledge.

Thanks,
William D. Wilmoth

One possible problem that I have seen is if you are using a DNS server that it
can't reach. It will time out trying to resolve DNS host names, to see if you
are authorized or not.
The only other time I have seen this problem is if the system is extremely
busy, or the network is. However, take a look at your DNS first. It might not
be the problem, but then again, --- it might :-)

I think I understand what you want.
Add a route to other comp IP using your own IP as gateway.
See if that works.

I am currently writing a book on Linux sockets programming. I would
like to add a chapter on IPv6, but the only items I have found are
pre-alpha patches. I could simply add the section as "future support",
but that does not help to write and test sample programs.

You would think someone who was writing a programming book would have
the intelligence to merely look at comments in the kernel source, or
the source code itself.

Subject: thorny proxy / dial on demand / email question...
Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 21:48:33 GMT

Hello all!

I'm currently attempting to solve the following problem:

A small non-profit I do systems administration for has a 56k dialup
connection. The ISP provides e-mail that is aliased to their domain.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] aliased to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Current configuration is using Eudora lite to check e-mail through a
proxy (WinProxy Lite) sitting on an NT server that does dial-on-demand
for e-mail and web browsing.

Now the thorny part...

We're switching everyone (~20 user office) over to Outlook98 to
utilize the netfolders feature. (ie, share calendar information
without having an Exchange server on the back-end) I've implemented
this for two of the employees, and realized just what this would do to
the entire office. As netfolders uses e-mail messages to transfer
schedule/calendar changes between users, the message path goes
something like this:

User1 updates their calendar, and then User2 checks for updates:

User1 calendar update: ==>> Winproxy ==>> 56K cxn ==> ISP ==> 56k cxn
==> Winproxy ==> User2.

This would quickly saturate their already thin bandwidth.

Is there a way to:
1.) Implement a local mailserver (Linux or NT) that would hold local
mail, while forwarding external mail to Winproxy and checking external
mail @ intervals.

OR

2.) Do the same thing as #2, while taking the place of winproxy and
doing dial-on-demand, etc.

OR

3.) Chuck the whole thing and just get a 384k DSL connection.

Stipulations:
--This is a nonprofit (ie, we can scrape together a 486, but $$ for MS
proxy server are non existant..)
--I have much more experience with NT than Linux. (MCSE vs. "I've
installed RedHat once...") However, I am ready, willing, and able to
learn...
--This solution needs to be RELIABLE. (hence my thoughts of
Linux...no snickers, please)

I eagerly await the wisdom of Usenet...

Many thanks!

Subject: ppp not working anymore

I recently bought a new 56k modem along with changing living locations.
THose are the only 2 factors that have changed. But yet for some reason
ppp wont work in linux now.

I'm using rh 5.1 and everything was working fine before i moved to
school in my apt and before i got a new modem. And no it isnt a
winmodem, I made sure it wasnt and it even says on the box it will work
with linux, among other OSes. But its not that the modem wont dial, but
linux even says that ppp isnt even in the kernel, but I havent even
touched the kernel, I had no reason to.

At startup I'm all of a sudden getting a lot of unresolved symbols
dealing with networking stuff ,ppp.o, being one of them. But I dont see
why since I havent even been using Linux for about 3 weeks so nothing
could have even been changed. Linux coudlnt even be accessed since I
hadnt used my rescue disk to put LILO back on the mbr since I had
reinstall Windows recently.

I do knwo the modem was installed on Com5 and irq 12 which i was able to
move it to com3 so i woudlnt have to make a new com port in linux. And
I used setserial to tell linux the modem uses irq 12 but I still dont
get anything, not even from minicom. Even if minicom did work I'd still
have problems with ppp b/c for some reason linux acts like ppp.o isnt
even in the kernel. I dont even know why it was complaining of
unresolved symbols at boot time b/c i compiled in ppp directly into the
kernel so i woudlnt have to worry about loading it everytime i wanted it
as a module. I have include output that I get when i try to do a
'insmod ppp.o'. it makes no sense to me but i put it in here in case
someone can help me with it.

If anyone needs any more info please let me know b/c I want to get this
damn thing fixed. It only makes me mad b/c I know that nothing has even
touched any files in Linux and before i got my new modem, and changed to
a diferent phone # since Im at school now, linux was working fine before
that. Even if the modem is fine somehow the damn ppp got messed up.

Im newbie to Linux and here is my problem. I have setup my
linux box as a firewall and I would like to make it as a
primary DNS so I can register a domain name (with granitecanyon
as my secondary). I have a single static IP that my ISP assigned to me.

Can somebody help/guide on how to set this up? Also, if you can
provide a sample "named" files for both primary and secondary, it would
help a lot.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Re: Linux friendly ISPs

I have been trying to get a Linux PPP connection to go for 3 days straight
now. Probably well over 30 hours of fruitless trial and error. It seems like
it should be simple connect, but trying every combination, trick and stupid
trick, it just sits there. Of course I can configure a connection with a
Windows or Mac in under a minute. Probably most ISPs can connect up a Linux
PPP, except it soooooooooooooo @#$%@#^&^ ridiculously hard that it's not
worth the effort.

The connection behaves exactly this way with minicom or a terminal program
(without the quotes and commas of course):

I Dial in,
Get "Connect 2X000/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS",
I hit <Enter>,
I get "Username:",
I enter my username and hit <enter>,
I get "Password:",
I enter my password and hit <enter>,
I get a ">" prompt,
I enter the command "ppp",
I get PPP characters,

Now this doesn't seem complicated. But whatever I try to put in, it hangs at
the "Connect" part and just sits. And I just sits...I've tried going through
every chat options, from the chat man page. All the suggestions in the How
To PPP guide. The how to hook up PPP by W.G Unruh. Absolutely nothing works.

So I'm asking, begging actually, if you where using a Linux PPP connection
using pppd to connect to the above connection, what would your script look
like?

Again, I don't think it's ISP being Linux "Friendly", it's the crappy chat
scripts that are ridiculously hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sorry for the soap-box...

What does this mean? And how do I get past it to the next error message w=

will probably be something like:
mount: only root can do that

Vitals: client and server are both running RH6.0.=20

Not really.
I've noticed anything with a memory leak can hang the entire system.
The KDE icon editor does this often.
So can other apps.
