Hey man, I had the same types of problems (and still do, after about 2
years). At any rate, a huge help to me in figuring out Linux has been Josh
Go (http://jgo.local.net/LinuxGuide/ ). You may want to check it out, and
go to the part about setting up a ppp connection. There's also information
on just about every other thing that you may want to do. Hope this helps

Two cards are not faster than one, at least not with linux. And if you use a
switching hub with full duplex ports connected to a full duplex switch this
will scale very well for 16 stattions.

Ususally a make file will be provided with the software to help you compile. You
just have to be in the right directory to execute the file.

If for example, you are in the process of recompiling the Linux kernel, you have
to be in /usr/src/linux, before you can run 'make config'. Of course, there is
some configuration process to go through before you can execute the make.

Hope this helps...

Hmmm...I must have had the good fortune to not to have run across any of
these. Not saying it doesn't happen, just that this must be somewhat
rare, as I have *never* had this happen. Despite my suspicions that
there are some serious memory leaks in NS, which I always leave open.

>The KDE icon editor does this often.
Buggy code can definitely do unpredictable things. If this happens
consistently, my solution is don't use it. I've only lost X once in over
a year, running 24*7, averaging 4-6 weeks between reboots. That was
several days ago, and it was a gnome app (gmc). While gmc seems pretty
nice otherwise, I won't be trying this one again for a while.

Subject: Telnet / FTP problem on RH 5.2
Date: Fri, 03 Sep 1999 01:03:48 GMT

Hi all -

I'm a newbie who just wants their network to go! I've got two linux
boxes running RH 5.2 with a RTL8029 based card (using n2k-pci.o).

My /etc/hosts file is set up correctly (as I believe), and both
hosts.allow and hosts.deny are empty.

The symptoms are thus:
-I can successfully ping either box from the other, using either it's IP
address or alias. I can also successfully ping either machine from
itself, using either lo, IP or it's alias.

-I can telnet either box into itself, using either, as above, the IP,
alias or lo, but attempting to telnet the other box results in a
timeout.

-Attempting to FTP into the local machine results in a "421 Service not
available. Connection reset by remote host" message, and trying to FTP
into the other box times out.

-Monitoring eth0 via tcpdump while attempting to telnet from the other
machine shows packet traffic, but no attempt to recieve connection.

Please, please help... this is driving me absolutely mad!

Thanks in advance (and sorry for the length of the post)

Josh Lowe

I decided to give redhat 6.0 a try. I bought it and a 1.08 gig ide hard
drive.

I soon found that the hard drive i bought was too slow. So I want to use
the drive for storage in windows.

How do i deinstall lilo and whatever else it installed into my win
drive. If i unplug the linux drive the comp dosn't boot properly. So I
need to change that...

Then, How do I reformat the linux drive in fat 32 or whatever windoze
uses.

You time is appriciated, thank you very much!

Subject: 3c905b on 2.0.36 -- "Operation not permitted"
Date: Fri, 03 Sep 1999 02:02:55 GMT

Hello. I am running Debian 2.1 release 2. I am trying to build a masq box
out of an old Pentium II 266 with two 3c905b network cards. The 3c59x module
gives no error messages when loaded. I am running kernel 2.0.36, with no real
options for a newer kernel without a working network first, though I am open
to suggestions.. I downloaded the latest (.99L) driver from donald becker's
webpage..

I follow these steps to try to get it to work. (note, not a cut'n'paste -- no
network yet. :( )

# ifconfig eth0 158.104.74.217 netmask 255.255.248.0 up
  (Yes. 255.255.248.0 is correct. :)
# route add -host 158.104.72.1 eth0
(correct IP for the residential network firewall)
# route add -net 158.104.0.0 netmask 255.255.248.0 eth0

# ping 158.104.72.1
sendto (init): Operation not permitted

(that sendto- line is close.. I think I got it right. :)

Running this program as root, well, I should expect full privledges. I
get a very similar error message using either of the two dhcpclients that
come with debian.

Oh yeah, some important bits -- the card, network port, and cable work
PERFECTLY under a win98 computer. (not mine..) So, my mobo *could* be
damaged, but I hope you guys know the fix for this.

Please help me fix this. cc'ed replies LOVED, since my newsserver is flakey,
and dejanews isn't as easy to use as it once was... :)

Thanks. :)

I'm running redhat 6 and I have "real" users setup in /etc/ftpaccess which
works. They only have access to their home directory, but can still browse
the entire file system. Specifically what I would like to do is make their
home directory appear as if it was their root ftp directory.

I've read the documentation, I'm probably doing some thing stupid like some
syntactical error. The documentation says to edit /etc/passwd, this is what
I have in passwd:

user1:*:501:501:/home/./user1:/home/user1:/bin/bash

I have a line similar to this in /etc/passwd, it accepts it but it doesn't
change user1 to the apparent root?

What am I doing wrong?

Yesss I found the solution to my problem.
During intall linux, I also install DNS server on the machine. Instead of
using my isp DNS server, it used the local DNS. Yuck no wonder it doesn't
work.
here is what I did to make it work.
open kppp and click setup. Click edit on the account use for connection.
There is a little check box on the DNS tab it say "disable local DNS server
during connection". I place a check mark on that one. Whoala ... it works
no more windose NT
anyway .. has any one try Cold Fusion for Linux yet ??? I will try it when
allaire release version 4.5. It's on beta now ....

Well, after a lot of emails back and forth, we finally fixed this one. It
turned out to be the same problem someone else had; the IRQ of the NIC was
set to 4, instead of something more reasonable. Once that was fixed (and
some configuration files straightened out) everything seems to be working
fairly normally... Thought I'd better post the resolution here, since at
least two people were experiencing the same problem.

To send me email, replace 'nospam' with 'home'.

P.S: I configured eth0 as the interface for the default route when I
installed Linux.
But later on, I delete this default route with the "route delete"
command. As traceroute shows,
the default route interface should be ppp0

You have to set the mode to 'auto' instead of 'turbo' because the driver
isn't able to do the DMA stuff. Use the IBM-DOS-tool to set the mode. I

- Install tcpip on the host
  or
- Install some hard/software (i.e. Open Connect Software) that
acts like a IBM 3174 to the host and like a tn3270-server to the
  ip-world.

The output was "1". This is the value that is there after reboot. There
is no echo statement in rc.local. Is it still necessary to put it there?
