Subject: Masquerading and Hub
Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 18:41:41 GMT
I'm just getting started setting up Masquerading for several machines.
I have a cable modem, a couple boxes have static IP for internet, and
several others I'd like to network to the internet, also.
All machines share the one common 10/100 hub, including the cable
modem.
My Masquerading box has two ethernet cards, but both NIC's are connected
to the same common hub. On the masquerading box, running 'tcpdump', I
see arp's happening and windoze box responding to both NIC's.
On the windoze box running netscape, I see the HTTP get going out, but
masquerading box does not pass the reply from the world, to the private
network. Is the linux masquerading confused by seeing the windoze box
on both NIC's
Do I need two seperate hubs?
Thanks in advance
Donovan Wade

So far I've got the ASUS drivers from their website and got them setup,
Ive got ISDN4k-Utils installed as well (to the best of my knowledge
anyway). But just HOW do i go about making a connection to the internet?
kppp just wont use the /dev/ttyl0-4 ports..?!

I use the xircom cards in our laptops at work and they work great. The only
problem I found is when trying to use the CARDBUS card instead of a plain card.
You can tell the difference because the end of the card that goes in the slot
is gold and the 16 bit regular card is silver. I havnt gotten a gold card to
work abd when i talked to Xircom theyt said the cardbus cards(32bit) talk
directly to the os and dont need anytype or card services software, We use
softex on the windows machines and I had to remove it before installing the
card. I think this is what is causing the same type of problem for you. When
the box comes up cardmgr (something like that) starts and when there is a card
in there it sets the config info. With these 32bit realport cards they dont
like the cardmgr software and try to set their own info.
To avoid problems i just used the 16bit card and it works fine. If you are
using a 16 bit card and getting these problems then something is worng. I did
not have to set anything for the card to work just set the address to eth0 and
away it went.
If you are looking for the network config part of redhats control panel just
open a terminal window in KDE and type in netcfg and it will start the GUI for
the network part of control panel..
Good luck!

Get the latest source for the Tulip chipset cards at Donald Becker's

Take the C source file "tulip.c" you've just downloaded and put it into
the kernel directory tree. Assuming you've installed your kernel sources
in the typical location, put "tulip.c" in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net.
Now rebuild the kernel.

Might want to double-check /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny also.

I've found that I don't get these problems with 2.2.5 and the latest
2.2.13pre4 from Mandrake. It seems to be a bug in the 2.2.{10-12} kernels.

Hello there ...
I just compiled the new hacker-kernel 2.3.16. Now I have problems with my
pppd. When calling the pppd I get the message that there is no ppp in the
kernel/as module. The names of the modules changed to ppp_generic and
ppp_async. I tried to change the modules.conf - but :(
I'm actually working with SuSE 6.2 and therefore with a new version of pppd.
Thanx :)

As long as you only want to play one person at a time (that is, only one
person behind the masquerading box plays quake at a time), you don't need any
modules. To play with more, use ipmasq_quake.o, which I believe comes with the
kernel.

My NFS server is not reachable from systems on the other side of the router.
Is there anything to keep in mind for such cases?
the following figure illuszrates this simple problem: the client cannot mount

Server _CAN_ access these directories.

You mean on a single machine ( your Linux gateway ) you can reach the network attached
to your ethernet device (eth0) and also the network attached to your ppp device
(ppp0).
Both at the same time from the same machine? For example you can ping two ip addresses
each on a seperate network?
