spake unto us, saying:
>For the exact reason as you mention "we read from top to bottom" you
>put your reply on the top and if someone needs to know what it is about

To do as you do (put the answer above the quotes) flies in the face of
existing convention in this particular newsgroup, however, and the end
result of mixing the two methods in a given thread is a mishmash which
makes things harder to read for EVERYONE regardless of the method they
use.
Newsreaders have been using the "put responses below the quoted text"
convention for well over a decade, and there is strong precedent for
continuing to do so. It seems to work very well in this context.
Microsoft Outlook appears to violate that particular convention, which
isn't all that surprising given Microsoft's past track record regarding
adherence to existing standards (defacto or otherwise).
Perhaps the best advice to follow is this: when a standard exists in
a given newsgroup, adjust your newsreader to adhere to that standard.

I search for the appropriate ATM card for intel-linux PC server.
I want to use the popular Fore ATM card.
But, I don't know which is good for pc server.
Have you used either Fore Runner LE 155 or Fore PCA-200EPC ?
Which one is good?
(I need PCI interface and good driver for linux).

Hi all
I have a Linux box with eth0, eth1 and ppp0. ppp0 is
obviously the link to the rest of the world (you :-)
And the routes are set up correctly, with ppp0 being the
default.
So, why is it that when I traceroute (from a shell on
said Linux box) to, say, www.netscape.com, the thing
wants to use eth0? Shouldn't it check the routing
tables?

Subject: packet forwarding question...
Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 01:39:40 -0400
I have a linux 2.26 slackware machine setup with one ethernet
port and SLIP connection (sl0) on the serial port. What I
want to do is have the linux machine bridge my sl0 and eth0.
I turned on packet forwarding in the kernal.
ipchains is ACCEPT for incoming outgoing and forwarding
But if I try to ping the IP on the other side of the SLIP
connection from a PC on the ethernet side, the linux machine
doesn't appear to be forwarding the packet from eth0 to sl0
right now I don't need this to be a filtered bridge, just
want to be able to bridge sl0 to eth0.
I don't need masquading since the IP on both networks are
unique and neither side will be seeing the internet.
The other end of the SLIP connection is another unix machine
How does packet forwarding know which devices to bridge to?
If I establish my SLIP connection after I packet filtering
is started will the packet forwarding sense the sl0 when it
becomes active (via dip).
Right now, it needs to be a SLIP and not PPP.
The End result is that I want to be able to ftp from the unix
machine (other side of the SLIP) to a PC on the ethernetwork
that the linux machine is connected to.
UNIX <--sl0 --> LINUX <--eth0 --
--
PC <--eth----
--
PC <--eth----
There is no DNS being used (or needed), everthing is defined
in /etc/hosts.
I have read the man pages and the howto's, but it doesn't seem
to packet forward. Now on the unix side, I setup a static route
for the IP address of the PC to be via the sl0 and the SLIP
address as the gateway. If I tried to ftp to the PC, I did see
the Txd flash on the modem, so I know something was going
across the SLIP, but nothing ever came back. If someone telnets
from a PC to the linux machine, nothing shows up on the SLIP
connection (at least no Rxd light).
Thanks

It's not so much a 'custom' as the way your software works. The old
mainframe e-mail systems (and some of the PC stuff patterned after them)
just tacked on a copy of the whole message you're replying to at the end
of your message.
Most of the offline .QWK mail readers from PC Bulletin Board (BBS) days
put the quoted material first and identified it with a leading character
such as ">" so you could tell a quote from a reply. You were supposed to
delete all but the relevant portions of the quotes and, if there were
multiple questions/topics, you were supposed to intersperse the quotes
with the replies, as I'm doing here.

Or if you're accustomed to this type of reply, you skip over the stuff
with a ">" prefix, go right to the new stuff and look at the quote above
only if necessary to figure out what it's about.
> If I'm really interested in the
> original append (and I can't remember if from

If the person who sent the reply just quotes the whole previous message,
it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference whether the quote
precedes or follows the new text. However, putting the quote after the
reply makes it very difficult to do a question/answer format for a
multiple topic message.

I don't have Auto-configure checked and I still have that problem.
I also have an idea that X only locks if you connect to the Internet as a
normal
user, but not as root, which is strange.
Isn't the problem with the suggested solution of xhost-plussing the new name
of
the computer, by then X is already dead and even typing xhost + in a
terminal
window once connected won't help at that point. I believe you would have to
do the xhost stuff
before you connect, it seems. This is very annoying behavior especially for
newbies.

I got my SOHOWare to work along with IP forwarding/masquerading. It's

Go to http://www.bmen.tulane.edu/~siekas/tulip.html to pick up tulip.c

Alternatively, go to
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html to pick up
tulip.c v 0.91 (I did not try this one). From this page, there is a
link to version 0.91g though.
Follow the instruction at the end of tulip.c to compile the file and
install it. Good luck!

Yes, had the same problem here with in.pop3d......then someone came up with
a script which would clear out stale files regularly (I can't trace the
script though); worked ok....had to change to Qpopper to solve the problem
of mails getting lost if connection terminated abruptly during mid-download.
Qpopper is ok...downloaded from eudora.com and set it up pretty
comfortably....it also allows you to send out bulletins (one mail downloaded
by anybody who connects to pop3)...though for better performance you may
want to compile 2 qpopper executables and only enable bulletin in inetd
config when necessary.
Documentation that comes with the program should be appropriate.
You'll want to go for Qpopper 2.53 or higher to solve buffer overflow
problem (you can search net for info on this problem) which I understand can
crash a server..hasn't happened to me in 2 years though I run a busy server.

Look in the SAMBA documentation. In principle you put an entry in
/etc/printcap giving the printer an input filter which is an executable
script. This script hen uses the SAMBA client to cat the file to the Windows
printer

KPPP, or mor exactly, the PPP daemon, retrieves a hostname for your=20
computer from the ISP after login. Probably, your computer is=20
automatically given an IP address and so it also gets a new name that=20=
differs from the one you gave to your computer.
Consequently, all programs that somehow refer to the old computer=20
name, including X, get confused.=20
You can turn this of in the KPPP settings for the connection. You must=20=
disable a checkbox that (I can't exactly recall it right now) reads=20
like "automatically assign host name". That does not do any harm to=20
your internet connection but fixes the problems you had.

1. Same uid defines same rights. So you can (adduser -u <number> name)
create many users with the same uid.
So, all this users could go into each other directories, because of
filerights in *n*x.
2. Don't know (ever tried)
3. I read that, on recent versions like 2.0.4 and upper, it was possible to
manage windows equivalent domains using Samba.

Subject: Importet groups
Date: 8 Sep 1999 10:03:26 GMT
Dear Networkians
We've installed a Linux computer (SuSE 6,1) with NIS and NFS here at the
institute. All users wich begin with an m are importet with the line
+@musers::::::
in the /etc/passwd password file.
In /etc/group we add the line
+:::
Thus actually should import the appropriate user groups.
If we login with kdm or xdm this functions without problems. But if
we do a login on the console or via Telnet, the Linux computer
assigns only the primary group! (My primary group is m21400, but my
other groups m214 and m are missing)
Does anybody knows the solution?
Greeting
David

You can even run Linux with IP MASQ enabled from a 1.44Mb floppy (see
www.linuxrouter.org, www.zelow.no/floppyfw or mulinux.nevalabs.org).
Masquerading is done in the kernel, and only requires the utility ipchains
(if you use a 2.2 kernel) or ipfwadm (if you use an older kernel) to
configure it, so a 120 Mb HD will certainly do.
The basic networking options in RH 6.0 are sufficient I would say. Just
make sure you also have ipchains or ipfwadm installed.
Johan.
