Subject: Problems with printing to Win95 printer
Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 16:31:15 GMT

I have RedHat linux kernel 2.1 and SAMBA installed on a linux box at home.
Win95 can see the linux shares (home directories, cdrom and an HP Deskjet
printer). I would like to print from linux to the HP Deskjet attached to
the Win95 box.

In the SAMBA smb.conf file I have the following:
[printers]
   comment = All Printers
   path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
   browseable = no
   guest ok = no
   writable = no
   printable = yes

In the printcap file I have the following:
lp:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
    :mx#0:\
    :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\
    :af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/acct:\
    :lp=/dev/null:\
    :sh:

I cannot print to the printer on the Win95 machine. Any queries to the
queue for the printer show no entries. I've tried using printtool and even
some of the suggestions posted here to no avail. If anyone has any
suggestions I would greatly appreciate the help

Mucho Thankx

Here's my two cents:

Add a 10/100 NIC to your Linux machine. That gets hooked to your
school's network. Keep the internal network the same. Either way you
need two NICs in the gateway machine and one in each machine on your
internal network. Changing the 10-Base-2 to 10/100 may improve
performance (especially if you get a 100Mb switch/hub...but worry
about that later).

The actual DEC tulip chips are no longer in production. Most of the boards that
can use the tulip driver have some clone of the tulip; some, like the PNIC II
used in LinkSys etherfast cards, are significantly different from the DEC
implementation and need driver code to take these differences into account.
IIRC the new version of the FA310TX uses the same chip, not a true tulip, but
it's still possible to find ones that have the older chip.

Try this. Bring up /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup in your editor.
Find the call of pump:

if /sbin/pump  $PUMPARGS -i $DEVICE ; then

Precede this by the following:

PUMPARGS="-h hostname"

where you should use the hostname your ISP is expecting.
Then reboot, or, if you know how, restart the network
configuration script. You may need to update to a recent
version of pump. All this is doing is sending your hostname
to the DHCP server; some cable modem services require this.

If this still doesn't work, install dhcpcd and replace the line above by

/sbin/dhcpcd -k
if /sbin/dhcpcd  $PUMPARGS $DEVICE ; then

Good luck.

Subject: qpopper, seems to work, but mailbox is empty
Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 12:24:38 -0500

I installed qpopper-qmail-2.53-1-PAM.i386.rpm
added this line to my /etc/inetd.conf : pop-3 stream tcp nowait
root    /usr/sbin/tcpd  in.qpopper -s

I can telnet to the host on port 110, and authenticate. I expected
everything was fine. If I send mail to that user and check
the mail with telnet, there is none. However, if I check it with pine,
the mail is there. If I read /var/spool/mail/<that user> the messages
are there. Does pop mail get stored in a different place? Which log
files might I read to see what's goin on? Am I starting the service in
inetd correctly? I've made this work before and it was a no brainer.

Thanks in advance.

The Windows network uses broadcasts to notify each other when a new
computer joins the group or a new share is activated. As long as all of
the computers in your workgroup are on the same subnet they will receive
these broadcasts directly and WINS is not required.

WINS is used to bridge between different subnets. Rather than forwarding
broadcast packets, the WINS server caches the information to build a table
of machines and shares. Any client that has WINS enabled (and pointing to
that server) will obtain the list of computers and shares periodically,
allowing it to know about machines on other subnets.

Aha.  OK.   Got it.

I think the helpful chap over at SuSE misunderstood my question.

I said I wanted to set up an Intranet with this box as a server, and
he said, "Oh you'll need to learn SAMBA."

I think you're right - Apache alone will do the trick.

Don't know about other distributions, but if you're using the RedHat
ypserv rpm, the ypinit script is pretty flaky. If you look at it, there
are two lines to slurp up the map list, one of which is commented out. I
got ours to work by commenting out the "yphelper" line and using the
"ypwhich" line.

Hope that helps.

I am not sure, please correct me if i am wrong, but after you logon to your
ISP a ppp connection will be put up, minicom is not capable of handling such
a connection.
You should be using a ppp capable dialup program. I like to use WVDIAL
because it's easy to configure and use.

I have, at present a two computer small network that works well. It is
a win98 box and a linux box connected with bnc cable (10 base 2). The
ip's are set to comply with a class c network and I can telnet, ftp
and ping from either machine. I have no problems with this setup.

Shortly I will be getting access to the internet via a 10 base T (100
Mbs) network at my school. What I want to do is setup the linux back
as an ip masquerade and an ftp server to the internet. My question is
should I upgrade the bnc network to a 10 base T 10/100 network with a
4 port hub. Or should I just get a 10/100 nic and put it into the
linux box as well. Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can log everything. I'm using iplog (check on linuxberg) and
you can log to whatever file or server you want with that. Combonation
of iplog and portsentry allows me to see whenever anyone scans me or
attempts entry.

The only thing I can tell you to help out is that the TULIP driver works
