Subject: Can't locate module ppp0:0
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 08:17:43 +0100
I have recompiled my kernel (2.2.11) to optimise a box for use as a router.
Only problem, I can't get ppp working.
I included it as a module (CONFIG_PPP=M) but my system seems unable to find
it. My /lib/modules/2.2.11/net directory looks like this :
8390.o
bsd_comp.o
dummy.o
ne.o
ne2k-pci.o
ppp.o
ppp_deflate.o
slhc.o
syncppp.o
My /etc/conf.modules file looks like this :
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
When I connect I get this :

Also, try setting your MTU and MRU (maximum transfer units and Maximum
receive units) to a higher number. Assuming your lines are fairly clean,
that might also improve speed.

How to change such a file into 'normal' linux format?

Hi,
After introduction of a 3Com switch 800 into my LAN of some 85 clients
has slowed down transfer rate to and from my Redhat 4.1 proxy/mail
server. It has dropped from some 100kbps to 15kbps!
I am told that turning the "autoneg" off of network interface card will
solve the problem. I need to know how do I do that in Linux?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: NT dns server request to my LINUX dns server time out
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 07:51:16 GMT
I have a problem which appears to be with only NT dns servers trying
to access virtual IP addresses served by my LINUX dns server. My
virtual domain is infojump.com set up under the real domain of
cois.com. We have two hosts set up under infojump.com on a subnet
provided by my ISP.
Virtual Host One
==========================
www.infojump.com 206.138.182.184
This is a virtual interface on a LINUX box with a primary
interface of bets2.cois.com (206.138.182.183)
bets2 is (206.138.182.183) is also my primary dns server.
and
Virtual Host Two
===========================
ndx.infojump.com 206.138.182.182
This is a virtual interface on a Digital Unix box with a
primary interface of ndx.cois.com (206.138.182.187)
bets2.cois.com is the primary dns server for www.infojump.com and
ndx.infojump.com. Both hosts (www and ndx) are set up exactly the same
on the dns server.
Since this is a subnet my ISP has to provide the reverse lookup for
the entire range of IP addresses for 206.138.182.xxx. His record is
listed with the Internic as follows:
1st name.bluegate,com 208.244.126.10
2nd name2.bluegate.com 206.65.93.70 (This one does not function)
3rd name3.bluegate.com 206.65.92.11
My Internic record is....
1st bets2.cois.com 206.138.182.183
2nd name.crescentcon.com 206.65.92.10
Whenever a surfer on the internet tries to access www.infojump.com
through their ISP's NT dns server it is succesfull but when they try
to access ndx.infojump.com a server "Request Timeout" results. The
results can vary. Sometimes they can get to ndx.infojump.com but not
www.infojump.com
>From the very same network whose NT dns server says it got a "Request
Timeout", I can do an nslookup and specify the dns server as
bets2.cois.com and the request is fullfilled immediatley.
Example
W95>nslookup www.infojump.com "Works OK"
W95>nslookup ndx.infojump.com "Request Time Out"
W95>nslookup ndx.infojump.com name.crescentcon.com "Works OK"
W95>nslookup ndx.infojump.com bets2.cois.com "Works OK"
W95>nslookup ndx.infojump.com name.bluegate.com "Works OK"
So essentially if the request is tried through an NT dns server I get
a "Request Timeout" but if I redirect the nslookup against the
Internic designated dns server it works just fine. I am assuming
that this is only from NT dns servers because I have access to two
networks that use NT dns server. They both have problems accessing
our hosts.
Has anyone seen this type of thing before. I would be very helpful if
a few people from outside our network would try to do some nslookups
as follows:
nslookup www.infojump.com
nslookup ndx.infojump.com
nslookup bets2.cois.com
nslookup 206.138.182.182
nslookup 206.138.182.184
nslookup 206.138.182.183
I would be very interested in your results and the type of dns server
your request was processed through. We have been struggling with this
issue for months and can't seem to get a handle why or how widespread
this problem is. All we know is that a lot of people do get to our
hosts but a lot of people also fail to access our host due to the
request timeout problems.
Thanks

(1) Turn off *ALL* internet services that you don't need (like telnetd,
ftpd, etc.) using linuxconf or whatever config tool is appropriate
for the specific distribution of Linux you're using.
(2) Go through your /etc/inet.d file and comment out anything that you
don't need. For my IP masquerading box, I have ALL lines in that
file commented out!
(3) Use a port scanner like nmap or something to see what ports are
still open after you do #1 and #2. I'm still amazed at how many
services a typical Linux distribution has enabled when initially
installed, and IMhO this is a security breach waiting to happen.
(4) Do a DejaNews search on Linux and security, and/or read some of the
FAQ pages on the subject like these:
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~jtmurphy/
http://www.kernel-panic.com/security/links.html
(5) Make sure you keep your software up to date, and watch the relevant
errata and security mailing lists and sites.
If you really want to run a web and ftp server, you're opening doors
that you need to be very careful about guarding.
You might also consider buying a book about firewalls like "Building
Internet Firewalls" or "Practical Unix & Internet Security", both from
O'Reilly. The latter in particular is a very useful book, IMhO.

How though, will I get around the display problem??
Is AFAIK linux text driven?? Will it work as firewall/protection? (I dont'
know too much about firewalls). I understand that the firewall pc is just one
that sits there and monitors the ports.. Is this true? Is this all that it
does? In which case, it would be a simple machine would it not? That is

I'm accessing Internet thru my univ's server, which has a proxy

In Windows we can use this program called AutoSocks which automatically

I got some problems with getting my machine on the network, and I wonder
if there are some bright minds here that can put me on the right track.
I've installed the A, K, D and N disk series of Slackware 3.5. The
kernel is a 2.0.34 with netsupport as described in the PCMCIA-howto, the
pcmcia package is 3.0.14
The hardware is a ThinkPad 560 with a Compaq 10/100 Netintelligent
pcmcia card. The card is recognized and the eth0 device is configured
up. I am able to ping the local machine on the eth0 device, so it seems
to be working.
I cannot, however, reach other machines on the network. I've set it up
to use ip-address 10.0.0.10, gw 10.0.0.1, mask 255.255.255.0, net
10.0.0.0, both in the rc.inet1 script, and in the network.opts script.
I am sure I am just missing something obvious, but I need to get a
pointer in the right direction. It is an old machine and some excess
cards and stuff that was tossing around in the office here, which I
wanted to rescue and install Linux on. I've never tried to install on a
portable before, but I have, urhm, some expericene with stationary
machines.
Thanks for any help you can offer,

Try the blocksize parameters with the mount command.
Something like
mount -o soft,rsize=1024,wsize=1024 <linux>:<path> <local path>
I remember these settings being neccessary when mounting a SCO or Linux box
to a IBM RT AIX 2.2.

Subject: problem using NFS between AIX and Linux?
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 16:54:55 +0800
Hi all,
I have tried so many times to config NFS between an AIX 4.3.2 box and a
Linux6.0 box and still unsuccessful. Everything is OK when I copy a
file(10MB) from a mounted NFS filesystem to local filesystem between two AIX
box, two Linux box and from AIX to Linux box. EXCEPT when I copy the file
from a mounted NFS filesystem(Linux) to local filesystem (AIX itself). It
take over 10 minutes to finish. I have tried add "insecure" option to
exports file on Linux side . Also, I have used the "mount -o vers=2"
command. Can anyone tell me what should I do now??
thanks

Hi all,
I have heard about "TCP wrapper" and "PAM" for many time. I can't found
any site talking about it. Can anyone point me any website talking about it?
thanks

Subject: Mail Server questions
Date: 13 Sep 1999 09:38:12 GMT
I have a question about setting up a mail server.
I have a linux server(486) acting as a firewall/masquerading machine for a
home lan. I have one additional linux machine(PII) on this lan.
I've gotten one of those free domain names from dhs.org, so the 486 is
named xyz.dhs.org, and the rest of the machines on the lan are labeled:
aaa.xyz.dhs.org, bbb.xyz.dhs.org and so on. Now let's say that the PII is
labeled bbb.xyz.dhs.org, and the 486 is setup enough so I can send mail to
it and it can send mail out.
What I'd like is one of two options:
OPTION I:
Configure the 486 so that any mail sent to bbb.xyz.dhs.org (both from
inside the network and outside the network) will be redirected to
bbb.xyz.dhs.org. With current setup, *anything*.xyz.dhs.org will be
received by and delivered locally to the 486.
OPTION II:
Somehow share the mail spool of the 486 so that PII can use the 486's mail
spool as its default mail spool(so that PII won't have its own mail
spool).
For both of these options, I would like a setup that'd do it for all users
on the PII, but it is not necessary. The current situation for the PII
machine is my own private machine, and I'm the only user on it.
Please e-mail me the solution as well as posting to this newsgroup. Thank
you.

Would be interesting what OSes you run on your clients.
I run a router with SuSe 6.1 - Kernel 2.2.7 and different clients connected
running Win98. I use IPCHAINS to forward different ports and can neither
complain 'bout Downloadspeed nor Uploadspeed - think there somewhere in your
LAN-configuration could be a problem, but to find this you have to give more
detailed information
