Steve,

You are using a cable modem, and so are a big target for people
looking to exploitable Linux machines on the Internet. You need to secure
your machine ASAP. Do a search on Linux and security, and you will quickly
get an idea of how to secure your machine, and why it is necessary to do so.

I guess you use ppp on analog modems.

first of all one line one user. so if you need access for more than one user at

the same time - you need more lines.
Ask your telco provider to bundle the lines with one number. that will solve
your
problem concerning numbers and lines.

while using ppp you should be able to use dynamic ip adressing. you have to
configure that on the host and on the client.

Edwin:

I am having a similar problem on an HP Pavilion 4535. IT uses the Celeron chip (400
Mhz) and the 810 Chipset. I have two PCI buses (one internal and one for the PCI
cards). All the cards on the PCI Bus 1 (the second one) report back IRQ=0.

I suspect that there is something wrong with the PCI bridge programming process. I
am not sure if it is the BIOS not setting the IRQs right (but Windowz is able to
figure it out, arrgghhhh) or if something in the Linux kernel is "resetting this
stuff".

Where did you hack the code to fix your problem? Can you send me the driver you
have and a diff against it. I am using the NetGear FA310TX 100 Mb/s card, so I need
to re-create your fix in the TULIP driver.

Have you addressed the other problems with the driver yet? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Charlie

Subject: Network Configuration manually
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 14:38:05 +0200

I use SuSE Linux on my private PC as a server.

I tried to config a NE2000 kompatible ISA Ethernetcard.

Sure, i can use Yast to do this job for me, but I am really interesting
in configuring this card manually.

I edt the /etc/config.modules, the /etc/rc.config, the /etc/hosts
and my lilo bootloader.

When shutting down I get the massage "Shutting down network device eth0eth0:
unknown interface."

When booting I get a massage about the /lib/modules... (I can not read so
fast
as the massage remove from screen - Is there an log-file for bootmassages?)

Who knows how to configure such an ISA ethernetcard manually?

No. So one big difference betweeen your setup and mine would be
the newer RedHat, newer glibc, etc.

At any rate, I've solved the problem by adding "export
MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS=True" to the beginning of a netscape shell
script, as suggested by another poster.

When I get around to upgrading to a newer Linux, I'll try again with
asynchronous DNS.

You could also run fromdos.
i.e.

I think this just sets the working directory for java. Might only be a

Put the following in ~/.netrc; mode 0600:

machine ftp.de.kde.org
login anonymous
password [EMAIL PROTECTED]
macdef init
cd /kde/snapshots/current
binary
get md5sums.gz
bye

End of what goes into ~/.netrc. This defines the macro "init" which gets executed
after login' in.
Login is also automatically because you supplied password and username.

Hi to everybody !

I have a problem creating a login script in
kppp. My situation is the following:

1. I'm connecting my computer to an ISP who then connects me to the
other computer which is
my real ISP. This looks like when I connect to the firs comp. I have
to isue at the username
prompt the "kiss.uni-lj.si" and the first comp starts the ppp which
then conect me to the second
comp. which then verify my Username an Password. Can somebody help
me how to make a
    script in kppp ?

2. I try to use kppp with the terminal-prompt but it seems that the
computer i'm dialing in does not
support the V120 so only grbbed text apears on connect.

Any hel apreciated.
Thank you in advance

you may have to setup isapnp, and the easy way of doing that is

Hi

I got the same setup as Dan. root is running fetchmail as deamon (There is
only 1 .fetchmailrc on the system). This doesn't ness up permissions on the
users mailboxes, as fetchmail uses sendmail to do the actual delivery. This
also means, that you can use a .procmail for each user if you so desire.
Since it's root there's running fetchmail it also means that root has to
know all usernames/passwords, but the difference between that, and looking
in ~username/.fetchmailrc is sutle...

You could install imap or a pop server. I've used qpopper (www.qualcom.com

Same thing here. I guess my provider doesn't allow it. Maybe it's
possible to use another port for telnet, like 1023 or something. I
think it could be done be adding a 'telnet2' etry to the
/etc/inetd.conf file and /etc/services

Haven't tried it yet, cause for now I've solved enough problems :-)

Check these two sites:

http://www.linuxrouter.org
http://edge.fireplug.net

The first runs from a single floppy. The second does for some versions,
but later versions require two. Either way, it won't strain a 40MB hard
disk. One other statistic you didn't mention was RAM. You'll probably
want at least 8MB.

You should better use the real device, ie /dev/ttySx instead of
/dev/modem which is just a symbolic link.

It simply means that kppp's attempt to initialize the modem failed, the
system call did hang. This is most likely due to a misconfigured serial
port.

Seems so. Use 'setserial -a /dev/ttySx' and 'cat /proc/interrupts' to

Isn't a problem. I ran fetchmail as root (sorry) and everybody gets
their mail.

Maybe you can use it by using an x-server on a client?
