Subject: Help w/ network Install
Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 23:54:34 -0700
Does anyone here have any experience with doing a network install. I am
in the middle of the installation and when the install is downloading it
keeps getting stuck. Sort of like it loses connectivity for a minute and
then I get a message saying its having problem finding laskdjf and then
I prss 'OK' and I get asked if I would like to try again. When I say I
would like to try again it continues fine for about five minutes and
then gets stuck again. At this rate the installation is going to take
days.
Anyone have any ideas? The only thing I can think of is to try a
different site, but I tried four other before this one and couldn't even
get this far with the other sites. I am trying to do the install/upgrade
over a redhat 5.2 to 6.0.
Thanks,
Aaron

Subject: DHCP question on RH 6.0
Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 06:43:25 GMT
Hi all,
I have a machine at work that I loaded RH 6.0 on. We use dhcp (NT
network) and I get an IP address just fine. I loaded the nameservers
and default gateway manually since they didn't seem to do it by
themselves and they don't change and I can access the network fine as
long as I update the /etc/hosts file with my correct address.
The question is, is there a way to get the hosts file updated
automatically with the correct IP address when using dhcp?
When I run /sbin/pump -i eth0 --status all the parameters seem to be
there. Is there a "default" IP address I can enter when using dhcp?
So that I don't have to run ifconfig to see what address I have now
and then change it in /etc/hosts before the network works?
Thanks!
Pointers to docs on this appreciated too, as so far I haven't seen any
mention of it. Just that you need the loopback and your IP in the
hosts file and BOOTPROTO set to dhcp but nothing connecting the two
(like when the IP changes)

For the RTL8029 don't you just need the ne2k-pci driver? AFAIR
that supports cards based on the RTL8029 chipset (the ne.c driver
does the same for RTL8019 cards)

Subject: Two parts... DNS setup and Squid
Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 11:36:40 +1000
Ok, first I'll start with the DNS stuff. I have two Linux PCs with external
IP addresses which I want to setup as primary and secondary DNS for my
domain, aisoftware.com.au
I have created the named.conf files and the SOA files for the domains and
started the name daemon. Is there anything that I need to get done by my
ISP or by anyone else's name servers for the internet to realise I have DNS
servers up and running and that they are authoritative for my domain?
Now, Squid....
Can anyone give me a quick run down on what I'd need to do to set Squid up,
or if it's easier/better IPCHAINS, so that our LAN has access to HTTP, FTP
and a few other common protocols/services through my Linux gateway. The
gateway address is 10.0.0.1/24 and obviously the rest of the LAN is on the
same network. Currently with Squid running I can browse HTTP, but nothing
else is working.
Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Testing hubs with multiport NICs
Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 23:57:00 -0700
Hi Gang,
My company makes a box which has 1 10baseT port and an optional 10baseT
Hub card.
I want to test each port on the Hub card using a single Linux PC.
For discussion's sake, let's assume the System Under Test (SUT) has 1
10baseT port, and the hub card has 2 ports.
The simplest scenario to test the ports on the hub card would be:
================= ================= =====================
| Linux PC1 | | System | |1|-----| PC2 192.168.1.101 |
| 192.168.1.151 | | Under | | ---------------------
================= | Test | | =====================
| | |2|-----| PC3 192.168.1.102 |
| | | | ---------------------
[HUB]-------------| 10bT | -|
| 192.168.1.21 |
-----------------
If I set up all three PCs as Linux boxes, I can easily have PC1 ping (or
ftp or telnet) PC2 and PC3 to prove all of the ethernet ports (system
10bT and each of the hub ports) work okay.
However, I would like to minimize the number of PCs I required (imagine
if the hub card has 16 ports) by adding a multi-port NIC to PC1. Each
port on the multiport NIC has a unique MAC address, and I can easily
assign a unique IP address to each NIC port:
eth0 192.168.1.151
eth1 192.168.1.101
eth2 192.168.1.102
Essentially, I am replacing separate PCs with NIC ports on Linux PC1.
How do I set up routing, gateways, etc. so that PC1 eth0 can ping (or
ftp or telnet) eth1 and eth2 through the hub card only? That is, if I
disconnect the cable between the hub card and eth1, I can no longer
ping eth1 (192.168.1.101)?
I am running RH6.0, and I have /etc/sysconfig/network and
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth[1-2] files set up. I can ping
192.168.1.101 (eth1) or 192.168.1.102 (eth2), but not through the hub.
Any suggestions?
Thanks much,
David Laird

I don't now about 2.0.X kernerls but when we did the similar setup to yours on
2.2.x, we experienced much the same problems. The solution was adding
nowait.1000 in /etc/inetd.conf so that the respective line looks now as:
http-proxy stream tcp nowait.1000 root /usr/local/etc/http-gw
http-gw
This is mentioned somewhere is FWTK FAQs.
I also installed in paralell the delegated proxy which does much better job at
FTP transfres. Besides it's also a stand-alone deamon.

could only speak for SuSE Linux, but there it is so, that you must install
the samba-package (or even the smbclient-package) to use the share of the NT
printer.
look at samba doc (or http://www.samba.org)

The linux kernels are built with networking support as default, so you
should have a loopback device too.
Try to ping your own Host or IP, it should work.
Maybe you've not configured networking at all, then it's time to do it
now. Your setup program from RH should
guide you setting up networking and loopback device.
Hope this helps,
Roland

Such adapters do exist but are harder to find and may be more
expensive than a cheap hub with both types of connector.

Hi,
I have a similar machine with RH6 on it - clean install and ftp works
fine. I have never seen '421 Service not available' which suggests to me
that perhaps the ftp server software isn't installed. Try
rpm -qa | grep ftp
You should get something like
anonftp-2.8-1
ftp-0.10-22
gftp-1.13-4
ncftp-3.0beta18-3
tftp-0.10-23
wu-ftpd-2.4.2vr17-3
wu-ftpd is the item of interest as it is the server end.
An 'rpm -ql wu-ftpd-2.4.2vr17-3'
will reveal the executable /usr/sbin/in.ftpd which is the reference from
/etc/inetd.conf
If it is not present then you will need to install it from the CD. If
rpm thinks it is present then it is probably worth checking that the
executable is visible and hasn't got deleted by accident.

I am encountering the same problem. The card works fine in Windows 98. In
Linux the Tulip.o driver is included, recognizes the card and has no
problem. But I am not able to ping any other computer except for localhost.
Configuration:
10/100 MHz card with autosense. Dual-speed hub with autosense.
And I do not know how to disable P&P in the BIOS. There is no such menu
item.
