Yes. Set it up to accept pop3 from your subnets and they can use any
pop3 mail getter to get their mail.
ISPs use Linux rather often with thousands of users, yours shouldn't be
that difficult to manage.

Have a look at "VNC" . If you want increased security - use
VNC with SSH. There are VNC clients for Linux , Windows, and Mac.

I 'twerent try for arrogance. I have put Linux up as a router for
multiple subnets and as a firewall for home and as just about everything
else a server can do but I have never heard of any of them called a

I still fail to see a difference between a router/firewall and what the

Well, I'm pretty new to the wonderful world of the Linux OS. I have Red
Hat Linux 5.2, Kernel 2.0.36, and have been trying to set up my modem for
quite some time. This is the story: I have and AOpen M-56P modem, and have
tried using "setserial" to set it up. Its on COM3, under DOS/Win so I used
the port /dev/cua2, and /dev/ttyS2, neither of which worked. I set the UART
to 16550A once, and now it won't let me set it again. When I use "minicom"
to test out the modem (while minicom is initializing I get a message saying
it can't find the config files, so it's using the defaults), than when I
dial up my ISP, the modem just sits there -- I can't hear the signal. I'd
greatly appreciate some help, on how to fix my problems, and get my modem
working. Thank's a lot!

We're contemplating installing VPN on our network. I'd like to use a Linux

There's plenty of talk about the Linux server side, but little information

What's available? What client software will work with which server

Hi all,
I have the same problem as David on this (under RH5.2). Some
additional details:
- for each rejection, there will be an entry in /var/log/messages (for
my syslog setup atleast...) indicating that ftpd shutdown on signal
11 (SIGSEGV). Buggered if I can figure what causes that...
- If I remove the -a switch on the ftpd line in inetd.conf and
substitute it for a -A, ftpd will load without consulting
/etc/ftpaccess (-a forces use of it). In my case, doing this fixes the
problem, indicating that there's either something wrong with my
ftpaccess file (likely as I recently toyed around with it), or a
related option somewhere. I've yet to find the cause of this.
Any suggestions?
Stu.

You basically have the choice between
- Ignoring the package management system and doing it by hand as on other
systems
- Using a Debian kernel-source-* package
or
- Using "kernel-package" to generate kernel packages using a regular kernel
source tarball.
I use the third approach myself: get a linux-2.x.y.tar.bz2 from
ftp.*.kernel.org, unpack it in /usr/local/src, "make menuconfig", "fakeroot
make-kpkg kernel_image" and "dpkg -i" the resulting kernel-image-2.x.y*deb.
The advantage of this is that, because you get real packages, it's very easy
to remove old kernels.

Hi there,
I've a linux box setup with pppd connection (ppp0 IF) to ISP and local
subnet connection (eth0 IF). Most things are working fine (all the
usual services) but I often get this wierd problem with inetd (or is
it traceroute) deciding what interface to use:
I'll do a traceroute to a certain external ip address & it will try to
do so via eth0. I'll have to force it to use ppp0 IF for it to work.
Yes, no default route is set to talk to the external gateway via ppp0.
I can vaguely remember the same thing happening with tcpdump - it
would only be interested in dumping eth0 packets, & not ppp0 packets,
unless I forced it. Can't remember if I had this problem with ping.
I don't have any extra routes to otherwise external addresses - just
the usual 4 (def/ppp0, subnet/eth0, lh/l0, gw/ppp0).
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Stu.

routing is layer-3 (ip) with layer-3 header re-writes and such.
bridging merely relays mac frames without rebuilding them. that's it

I can connect to my ISP, I get an IP, and I can ping IP addresses, but
DNS doesn't work. I've been messing with this problem for a couple of
weeks now, and I've read everything I can lay my hands on but nothing
seems to work for me.
I just did a fresh install (actually several) in an attempt to figure
things out. Here's what I did:
Installed Redhat 6.0, custom config. Replaced the default selections as
follows: KDE instead of Gnome. Added the extra documentation and C
development.
I have no network adapters in the machine and didn't configure any of
the network stuff from the RH setup menus.
Configured my modem with modemtool.
Ran netcfg, setup the nameservers, added the ppp interface, turned on
PAP, added my username and password. I left everything else at the
default settings.
When I activate the interface, the modem dials my ISP and I'm connected.
Ifconfig says I have an IP address, and I can ping IP's but not names.
Hosts, host.conf and resolv.conf all are correct. But something isn't
working. I'm sure it's probably something silly that I've overlooked but
I sure don't know what it is. I'd sure appreciate any assistance on this
one.

The 2.2.11 kernel includes support for the AMD HomePNA network chip. If the
Diamond card uses the AMD chip it will work. I think they do. AMD and Intel
are the only manufacturers of HomePNA compliant network chips and most
companies use the AMD chip.
Since no current distributions are using a kernel that new, you'll have to
compile it yourself.

I have a feeling that the pppd isn't connecting properly to your serial
connection. If you add the follwong to your ppp options file:
logfile /var/log/ppp.log
and then something like
tail -f /var/log/ppp.log > /dev/tty10&
You should be able to watch the ppp negotionation on one of your virtual
terminals to see if anything is actually happening across the link. It would
also be worth dumping the contents of your syslog (/var/log/messages on
RedHat).
Another alternative is to use a "intelligent" dialer to do the dialup and
attach and run pppd. I use Wvdial 1.4 which works quite well, and even works
with diald (when you get onto demand dialing that is ;-).
If you can't figure it out from the logs post the *extracts* to the group for
analysis.
