*Exactly* where you get it depends on details you haven't told us (and may
not know). Full-size Linux systems generally are some particular version
(called a "distribution") of Linix. Common ones are Debian, Red Hat,
Mandrake, SuSE, and Slackware.
Distributions have packaging systems that facilitate installing sets or
related commands. IF your system lacks "make", it may well lack other things
you need,, such as the gcc compiler itself.
I'd suggest you check your system for clues as to what distribution it uses
("uname -a" often gives a helpful hint), then post again with specifics. Or
ask the client for the installation CD he uses.
If you want to try installing stuff without the help of a package manager, a
good general repository of Linux software is Metalab
(ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/).
