If you're more familiar with BSD, you could get warmed up to FreeBSD, but an
entry level Linux that I would suggest is either Mandrake with the easiest
(but you have less control) installer.  RedHat is decent for all levels, but
may be a little difficult for someone who has never seen Unix coming from
the Windows world.

What do you plan to do with the OS?  That would help narrow down which
distro would best suit your needs.
