I've seen a lot of good replies, but from a quick scan nobody has
mentioned 'linux on laptops' (http://www.linux-laptop.net/ is the current
address). Laptops have all manner of peculiarities, this might help your
decision.
Also, if you want to use koffice (with kde2) or staroffice you will need
a fast processor and probably extra memory to get a reasonable response.
