here's how i would do it
this will make the archive
tar -cf <filename for arcive (ie myarchive.tar)> /path/to/directory/or/file
this will compress the arvhice
the -9 = best for space compression
gzip -9 <filename of archive (ie myarchive.tar)>
then copy that .tar.gz file to your other dirve.
