Richard, sorry about the delay replying, I've had an "interesting" week,
although this has nothing to do with my network. The card is by Netgear,
part of an SB105 Network Starter Kit. It uses the Natsemi driver (FA311, I
think). It's straight 10/100 Base-T twisted pair. I've checked the kernel
docs, but there is nothing about options for the natsemi module. I had a 
look at natsemi.c, but the only options I can see seem to be to turn on 
debugging mode.

Although using a known good cable doesn't help, I still think this is more
of a hardware problem than software. According to linux, the interface is
up, just not passing any packets. From this I deduce that the io base
address is suitable, otherwise the interface wouldn't be regarded as up ?
What really gets me is that for the other machines my hub shows a
connection at a very early stage of booting up, well before eth0 is
brought up, whereas this one never makes the LED light.

Oh well, off to search google some more about this. I'm going away next
week, but I'll let the list know if/when I solve this.
