MANY thanks to those who took the trouble to answer my rather incoherent plea 
for help, and who gave me the necessary encouragement and clues to fix it.

For the record, if anyone wants to note this, I'm running RedHat 7.2, Gnome 
(and Kmail), and to 'kill' the desktop settings and restore the Gnome 
defaults, just delete (or rename) the  .gnome   and  .gnome-xxx   directories 
in /home/USERNAME/
