I can't offer advice, but merely point you to a discussion forum archive in which it appears off hand that the nVidia problem is widespread and that there's no consensus as to cause or correction: www.mcdownloads.com/ In yourcase, you are sensitive to which app is running, and someone did suggest that the hang occurred whenever an application requested a resolution change. Apparently different drivers are problematic to different degrees, some people upgrading them and others downgrading. The most recent driver I found was 1.0-2960, but I don't know where my old driver was stored by RedHat 7.2 so that I can find out my current version.
