Sorry to follow up on my own question, but seems to have taken a
strange root. I need to append something to my original query:

I get gdict to run OK as an application from an icon I put into my
Favorites menu, but it still won't allow itself to appear as a small
text entry region in my main panel.

Where can I read up on the panel to better understand how it works?
