I am not 100% certain either, but I believe you are correct.

Although the distinction you make between object files and binaries is 
correct, I am so used to the (imprecise) dichotomy between source and 
object code that I read the question to be about binaries, hence answered 
as I did. Sorry if I mislead anyone.
