Firstly, thanks for the reply. I was very suspicious that both the DVD and EPROM distros of Woody, which came from different sources, should seem to have the same error.
So, I installed the EPROM version on my other machine, a notebook, (wrecking Windoze98 in the process Hooray!) and it installed OK. Therefore the answer must lie in the other machine. This has a Pentium 3 at 600MHz, and drives hda, hdb, (both 6.4Gb), and hdc (20Gb), and hdd a DVD 16 times read only. I eventually found that the fault was due to insufficient strong coffee whilst partitioning and configuring my drives. I now have both SuSE 8.0 and Debian Woody running fine on hdb and hdc respectively, and have tried loading new packages, and deleting others, on both. It's going to be fun comparing them, and furthermore, getting first hand experience of the Distros without raising the flame temperature on the internet ! I now intend to try out the Free Pascal compilers on both. Best wishes, and thanks.
