Maybe you're less newbie than me and already know this, but I'll try and give a piece of important advice in the way of kernel updating just in case. Advice follows: be sure to make a backup of your current working kernel before trying to recompile or compile a new one. Name it "vmlinuz-2.4.x-x_backup" or something like that. Then, if your recompile or new compile is less than successful, you can boot to one you know works ok on your system. Doing that could have saved me some headaches in the past.
