I don't have direct exporience of that hardware, but just to check it, have you tried connecting the laptop to a CRT? If it looks OK there, then you might have a problem with the LCD not displaying enough colours. If it's broken on there, you might have the graphics card configured wrong.
erm - try the XConfigurator or XF86Setup to interactively mod the X settings. Paul.
