Hi Peter

Being dumb I gave away my RH 7.2 box set only to find out that the problem you
discuss is not the only problem with RH 7.3. In particular my modem freezes
or locks up which can only be cleared by disconnection and reconnecting. This
did not occur in RH 7.2. Now, there has to be some pattern to this which I
haven't figured out yet but in general I suspect it is because I am using
Kppp.

If you recall recently I posted a major rant concerning RH 8.0 and how trashy
it is in comparison to RH 7.3 and RH now apparent concept of trashing KDE.

Point is that to me the last usable stable version of RH is 7.2 not RH 7.3.

My advice is if you have a box set of RH 7.2 install that and then update the
programs. At that point you will be up to the level of RH 8.0 except for the
kernel and the installation programs which are by RH and are the source of
many of the problems. As far as the kernel goes that too can be updated but
it is a wee bit more complicated than updating programs.

For myself I just purchased Mandrake 8.2 and am in the process of evaluating
it. If it functions adequately I plan on installing it on a notebook where
automatic updating wold be highly desirable. As for the desk top box I am now
look at Debian since I have never had good luck with SuSE and the US phone
system and trying to reconfigure it by script files. In reality I suspect
this idiocy of one click installation screwups has not reached its zenith
yet. I only expect this to get much worse.

To me the major distributions are making a major mistake in trying to make
Linux one click installation to appease the Windows crowd. Think about how
many MS boxes does the end line consumer have to install Windows on. Most of
the time it is all done by professionals who do the same installation on
1000s of like boxes at a time.

The question then becomes why would such level of professional want one click
installation over having the best drivers, programs, and other assorted
software components required for a top quality system.

As far as the non teckie types installing Linux I have had a little experience
with that. I can recall one individual (retired) who was a 60's mainframe
computer type in particular strongly insisting that there was something major
wrong with Linux because he could not get the program to run correctly under
MS Windows. No amount of explanation on my part ever convinced him that Linux
was an operating system that is a replacement for windows. It was a most
enlightening experience especially in light of his former computer engineer
status.

Point is if the major distributions are expecting the average user to ever be
able to replace Windows with Linus they have to be smoking something
recreational because that just is not reality.

Which brings us back to the RH and SuSe installation problems. The technical
concept may be perfect but the human side is completely out of wacky with
reality.

Thanks

Frank
