I am just beginning to work with Red Hat Linux 8.0. I have the OS installed on a computer connected to a small network and the internet. I am able to connect to the internet via a broadband connection without problem. I purchased "Red Hat Linux 8 Bible" to learn more. One of my objectives was to be able to see and share files and printers between the Linux box and the Win XP box. No printers are connected to the Linux box. Linux is the only OS on this computer.
With the help of Red Hat Linux 8 Bible, I think I have SAMBA working on the Linux box. I can see MyGroup on the Win XP box in Network Places. If I select Mygroup, I get Samba Server (Localhost). If I double click, I get the following error message ======================= \\Localhost in not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find if you have access permissions. You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. Go to System in Control Panel to change the computer name and try again. ======================= Reading Red Hat Linux 8.0 Bible indicates I "should" be able to see the linux file system at this time. Also, how would I go about "seeing" the Win XP system from the Linux box (i.e., is there something comparable to network neighborhood in Linux). I boot the Linux box to Gnome. Very little experience with command line (but always willing to learn). Have I just tried to do too much too early? I am reading chapter two of the book (covering the installation) and skipped forward to chapters 15 and 18 to get the networking info. I learn best by doing -- picking an objective and working toward that objective. But the error message has me stopped in my tracks. Your patience and suggestions are most appreciated.
