Because that is the only way to make the transfers unless you know of a better Linux replacement of MS's Hyper Terminal than Minicom. The second computer is NOT a Linux box or a MS box but is a specialized process control computer whose only access is by Hyper terminal under MS Windows. I am attempting to using Linux in this computer (the command computer) with the objective of replace MS's Hyper Terminal with Minicom under Linux. Please I don't want to get into the configuration of a Sweitzer system (the system being controlled) on this list. Suffice it to say that it is not Linux nor MS. I only want to configure Minicom under linux in the format in which I previously had it before I lost the Minicom installation instructions. What I would appreciate knowing is if I issue the commands you suggest will that change the operation of Kppp such that I can not then connect to the Internet.
