I don't mean to be callous, but my inquiries here of a similar sort have been met with stony silence. I think USB - at least of the "hot pluggable" variety - has some serious problems under mainstream Linux. I've thought of finding a USB-Linux list on which to pose such questions: you might want to try that if you get no helpful responses here.
