Hi, my own worst suspicion turned out to be true. The motherboard had failed which was a little less then 2 years old, yet old enough that this type can not be found any longer and therefore all the sockets of the new boards are different forcing me to buy as well a new processor and memories. Guess that keeps the industry running.
The new board is P4VMM2 by ECS Elitegroup and I was unable to configure X in RH7.3. The first time this happened since RH5.2. I then went over to Slackware 9.1, got X surprisingly working there, copied XF86config over to RH and all is fine except I am $200 poorer.
