Thanks for your input, Ken.  That puts some more pieces of the puzzle into
place - though I'm still working on the full picture.  elinks does tabbed
browsing, btw (not sure if Links 2 is built on it), as does Links hacked -
the latter being a sort of competitor to Links 2 that does inline
graphics as well.
