    I dont know how to answer your question if you are using xdm. Part of the
syntax of 'startx'  is

   startx -- <hostname>:<display number>

    The hostname, if left blank is the current host. The display number, if not
specified defaults to 0. The first startx invocation for a host starts the X
server on display 0. All subsequent invocations for 'startx' must use unused
display numbers for the <display number>. Thus, if you already have an X
session (and it is the first one), going to a different virtual console and
doing
    startx -- :1
     will get you another X session.
