A quick answer (off the top of my head, too :-)

I don't think the 1024cyl limit is meant to be for Linux. It's meant to
be for _the partition your box is booting from_. And it's needed because
of *bios*. Linux can reside wherever you want. Is your box already
*running* win95, the way you described it ? ...

In my installation, it's only the /usr directory which has a partition
of its own (1.4 Gigs on a 2.1 Linux-only drive, and they're already 75%
full). But I have three hd's...
You might find it useful to reserve a swap (virtual memory) space as a
partition, too. Actually, I've 128 megs for it (with 64M ram), and it's
only used when running netscape and gimp simultaneously. But I'm SURE
I'll need it later...

Get as much as possible information on your hardware before and have it
at hand (it would be quite uncomfortable opening the box, shutting it
down, power it off, getting your video card out, just to see what chip
and how many ram you have, then start it all over again... ;-)
I found it quite useful, under Win95, the "system" item in the
configuration panel has a feature which (paper-)prints out quite a lot
of details on your system, such as irq's, i/o addresses, DMA channels...

The problem (if there is a problem) is on Win95's side ONLY. Linux can
read ANY file system (except the new FAT32 of Win95B which wasn't yet
recognized 'til recently, there you need at least kernel 2.0.35,
hopefully RH 5.1 has it ???). So, you'll have to put your shared files
onto a Win95 partition. Just as an example : I downloaded the Debian 2.0
system under Win95 (CD's weren't available yet), then installed it under
Debian 1.3, all in the same machine... NO PROBLEM ! No problem reading
floppies, CD's or Zip's either...

Matt Welsh's "Running Linux" O'Reilly ed. (that's what I've got. No
deception, even if my 1996 edition might be a bit outdated). It contains
a Xwindows chapter, too.

Neither do I, at least as long as I still have to use Win95 besides
Linux. This because my Win95 seems to have a kind of "suicide" feature
built-in, and sometimes I need to reinstall it (which makes LILO
disappear from MBR).

This is the "menu" feature in Windows' config.sys file. See your
win-manual for details. One of your menu items could be "Start Linux"
which is done by the "loadlin.exe" program (comes with Linux
distributions) out of Dos-Text mode.
There is a "Linux for Win95" program, too (downloadable on some Linux
site), where you can put a "Linux inside" icon onto your Win95 desktop,
and start Linux with a double click...

I think it does now. After installation, if any problems, you can see
the linux-sound mailing list (e.g.) and ask some specialists (I'm not).
