Real newbie, still sucking Linux milk, huh ? ;-)

It looks like you're mixing up something, it's not very clear what you
mean by "terminal" here...

Anyway, here are some general hints :

<Ctrl-Alt-F1...F6> : switch between 6 different (simultaneous) Linux
shells (virtual terminals) on the same machine, (in text mode). They get
you from a X-Win
session to a text mode shell, as well (remark : an INDEPENDENT shell,
not a command line window in x-win ! The latter is done by running
"xterm" or similar x-progs).

<Alt-F7> brings you from one of these text mode shells back to X-Win, if
one is opened.

As about switching between different window managers, that depends on
what window managers you're running and how the menu's are configured...
