I had the same crap happen too me. I still don't know why it happens.
Did you specifically pick the uid of 501? It's better to let adduser
pick the uid, because user ids are sometimes supposed to be over 1000.
I have slackware, and if I create a user with a uid of under 1000,
all the same crap happens to me.
