What about Java? Others have recommended this as a starter to
non-programmers. I gave it a go and recently have finished my first
ever "real" programme! I guess it was about two-months of very casual
learning - but I *do* code in plain text as I find learning an app (eg
J-Builder) just complicates the issue. Now I have the bug and after a
bit more experience with this may move up to C/C++.

PS: sorry to others if this is not the right list for discussing
programming, but I hope it has relevance to all.
