The reason winmodems are "winmodems" is because, to put it in laymens
terms, there are no jumpers on the card itself, thus relying on the
operating system for its sole operation. Manufacturers make these kinds of
modems in hopes to sell a product that was made VERY cheaply and make some
sort of profit while at the same time, hitting 90% of all PC users. The
Windows 95 kernel does most of the work in regards of how the modem parses
information from the kernel and its respective entities...
