With Slackware you can edit your ~/.profile and put in the paths you would
like to add by adding the following line:
export PATH=$PATH:/dir/blah:/what/ever:/and/so/on
after you do this you can do a source .profile or logout and log back in.
I think the file you edit with Redhat is called ~/.bash_profile
