A mouse on Com1 and a modem on com3 will certanly cause this sort of
problem.
You can check to see what IRQ is getting interrupts from which device using
'procinfo' or if you don't have procinfo cat /proc/intterupts'
Also 'cat /proc/ioports will give more information on what is using ioports.
I have a machine with a internal modem, (oops dont know its type) it was a
gift to our club which is where the computer is, to init the modem on IRQ5
we do;
setserial -v /dev/modem irq 5
We have a symlink in /dev like;
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root uucp 4 Mar 6 14:05 /dev/modem -> cua3
This is of course a vauge pointer for you, sorry i cant help more.
I am sure others with more Telmodem experiance will contribute a more
detailed message for you.
