I dont have umsdos so all i can say is the faq about makeing a kernel can be
found in /usr/doc/faq/howto/Kernel-HOWTO.gz this one can be read with
'zless Kernel-HOWTO.gz'
Another handy referance is /usr/src/linux/README its in plain ascii.
