There are 2 ways, one of which should already work on your system.
Simply hitting the alt ctrl or shift key should show you some instructions,
a list can be found with the use of the tab key.
Hitting enter will load the first image defined in lilo.conf.

The other way is to define a "message-file" as described in 'man lilo.conf'.

I dont think so, eliminating the delay= line in /etc/lilo.conf will tell
lilo not to wait at bootime and load the first image defined. Futher more
the man page does not say what the limit is for delay=tsecs 10th's of a
second.

Depending on which distribution you have, the full lilo README can be found
in;

Redhat       /usr/doc/lilo-x.x.x/
slackware    /usr/doc/lilo/
debian       /usr/doc/lilo/
suse         /usr/doc/packages/lilo/
