Why is it that as soon as someone says, my this or that does not work, but
it did with my last install or in DOS, and says i have just installed bl-bla
linux distribution, some curps up and says "compile a new kernel".

People, the distribution kernels which are installed from the distribution
source are "Modular kernels" which means just about "ALL" drivers and
filesystems for that kernel version are either in the kernel or compiled as
modules. That means that if you have just installed Redhat, slackware,
suse, or debian you have all the support you need, execpt if you are a radio
ham, only debian has those included, or if you said no to installing them
and the kernel, but that would be a mistake you will never forget.
