Hi Barry,
normally only root can mount devices, unless you change the entry in
/etc/fstab. If you're logged in as a normal user, open a terminal and type:
su -
You're then asked for the root password, after entering it, you have superuser
rights (sounds exiting, and can actually become "exiting" if you don't know
what you're doing...). Then type:
mount -t -r iso9660 /dev/hd# /cdrom
This assumes you have a (E)IDE CD-ROM-drive. "#" stands for a letter that tells
the OS how your CD-ROM-drive is linked to it's controller. On a standalone
system with one (E)IDE hdd and one CD-ROM-drive /dev/hdd and /dev/hdc are good
starting points for experimenting. If it isn't right, you'll get a harmless
error message. Of course, you could mount into any empty directory, but /cdrom
seems convenient ;-).
"umount /cdrom" unmounts the CD-ROM.
