Joystick configuration?

Can anyone give me some suggestions on getting my Sidewinder Gamepad set
up with RedHat 5.1?
I downloaded and compiled version 1.2.10 of the joystick drivers and ran
'insmod jostick.o', but programs (at least SNES9x) still seem unable to
use the gamepad.  (Tried 'insmod joy-sidewinder.o', but it said the
device was busy...)
