There have been a lot of responses in this thread, however, one question
apparently has not been asked. What exactly is the "startup diskette"
mentioned? If it is a single diskette it probably mounts /dev/hda<n>
automatically, and the only copy of fsck is on the file system you want
to fsck. A typical rescue system requires two diskettes--one for
the kernel and one to load programs into the ramdisk that is actually
mounted as root. If this is used, /dev/hda<n> will not be automatically
mounted and fsck may be run on it. Of course, fsck must be in the ramdisk
as part of the rescue system.
