It is most likely a problem with your smb.conf file.   I would suggest going
to the samba Site and getting a new package.  I know that the developement
(ALPHA) samba servers have both encrypted password support, NT Domain
support and a nice Web interface for configuring Samba.  I am currently
Running Samba-2.0.0-alpha8  and I have connections to my domain (with
encryped passwords), and using the Web interface, was able to configure the
server in less than 5 min.  The Web configuration tool is called SWAT.  It
works really well.  You can run it through either CGI, or through Inetd.
