You can use a period (full stop) -> . <- on a line on it's own.

IIRC you need to look at  /etc/mail.rc -  Here's mine

set append dot save asksub askbcc
           ^^^
The 'dot' causes your mail prog to interpret a period alone on 
a line as a terminator for the msg.  askbcc is useful if you
want a copy of mail you send.
