I have been getting up steam to do this recently (wanted to get my diald
going first), and I've been reading the Linux Firewall HOWTO. Depending
on what you want to do, IP filtering or a proxy set up, the HOWTO suggests
a couple of packages. For IP filtering, it suggests the IP Firewall
Administration Toolkit (IPFWADM) at http://www.xos.nl/linux/ipfwadm/

For proxy setups there are SOCKS and the TIS Firewall Toolkit (FWTK):

SOCKS is at
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/network/misc/socks-linux-tar.gz

FWTK is available from Trusted information Systems
http://www.tis.com/

I also went to www.freshmeat.com (or is it .org?) and searched on "socks'.
It found SOCKS5, which is also proxy setup.

As I implied above, however, I don't have any direct experience with these
applications yet. Since there is the potential to set things up so
*nothing* gets out, I figure it would be a good idea to read the
documentation at least twice before I even started. (Good thing too, cuz
I'm a bit confused!)
